TOP TV REPLY ABOUT REPEATS

R99 a month.

Personally, for that price, you are lucky you are getting SOME programming in COLOUR.

Sound too? Wow....lucky.

Shows from 1998 you say? Incredible....what a bargain!

Firstly, I pay R249 per month, not R99.
And until they opted to repeat their ENTIRE schedule for the last 3 months, it was definitely worth it.

Frankly, for the next 3 months, until the repeated schedule completes, the value for money as opposed to the similarly-priced offer from DSTV is simply non-existent.
Awesome for those who only just got TopTV though so I'm sure they won't be complaining.
Just us early adopters.

Thank you for this. If you go onto their website and check the schedules into September you are in for a surprise. It all looks the same again...TopCrime with all their rubbish shows is starting 18 wheels of Justice, Tropical Heat and Relic Hunter at Season 1 again. FoxFX is looking very similar. TopHistory and TopExplore very little change. TopOne is the only channel with some new content. So by TopTV's argument that because of all the new subscribers it is worth their while to repeat everything. This means in 3 months time when they get another 50 000+ subscribers they will repeat all again...
As they sign on new subscribers they lose subscribers from the previous 3 months. So is TopTV just good for news channels? At least these are current. and happening.

I guess this is why they are not going to publish a magazine programme guide like DStv and other payTV service providers around the world. Their repeats are so atrocious at the moment. They are too embarassed by them.

Bloody fools..at the rate they are going ,they are not satisfying the customer at all.I was so eager to get TTV,i was amongst those who started the initial rollout and this is how they treat us!!Was too good to be true!

I hope that they will learn there leason my whole family and all my friends has just canceled their service with top tv and they told them the reason in black and white with a full 2 months guide all channel/shows/movies repeats

Toptv Repeats

Any idea, which month the repeats end?

I've been collecting the TopTV program schedule in a database recently. I now have a whole 17 days of data. I know it's not a lot, but it's what I have to work with here. (Their online guide is really badly maintained so it often has no info more than 5 days into the future, otherwise I'd look a bit further into the future)

Here's the summary of what I have found for the ShowTime channel (since that's the example used earlier in this thread). There are 77 shows over 17 days, of which:
3 have never been repeated
35 have been repeated twice
23 have been repeated 3 times
11 have been repeated 4 times
2 have been repeated 5 times
3 have been repeated 6 times

So based on that relatively small sample, it's pretty clear that their majority of shows are not being repeated that often. At most a show is repeated just under every three days.

Yes, I know they've repeated entire seasons of shows, and yes my data set is incredibly small. But they've given a reason (regardless of how reasonable it is) as to why they repeated the entire lineup of series and hopefully that won't happen in the future (otherwise their reasoning will no longer be even vaguely valid) and my data set will grow over time so hopefully I can add to it and give more accurate stats over time.

So far they have 4.5 unique shows per day (77 shows /17 days), with the rest filled up with repeats. 4.5 shows a day isn't too bad in my book, especially considering this is a movie channel.

Does anyone have anything similar for DSTV so we can compare how their repeats stack up against TopTV's?

Please excuse my ignorance but I don't fully understand your method of calculation here. To me, it seems your math is wrong.

1. You're saying that over the course of 17 days, there were 77 shows in total.
2. You say that of those 77, 3 of them were not repeated and therefore were unique.
3. You then, for some reason, divide the total 77 shows by the amount of days, which should, in theory, give you the total amount of 'shows' per day, not just the total amount of 'unique shows'. (Unless your initial statement was incorrect and there were in fact 77 UNIQUE shows over the course of 17 days, which seems highly unlikely.)

By my count, if there were 77 total shows over 17 days, of which 3 had never been repeated, that means that you get a SINGLE new show once every 5.6 days. Everything else is repeats.

Maybe I've just misinterpreted your data...

My bad... 77 UNIQUE shows. I'd assumed that the whole "35 have been repeated twice" section would make it clear enough, but that's probably why I'm a programmer and not a PR person. ;)

There were 214 shows broadcast, of which 77 were unique from the 9th of this month till the 26th. Of course that's not to say that all of those 77 shows were movies, some of them would have been those mind-numbing filler pieces that all Movie channels seem to include at some point. I can post a list of each show, how often it was repeated, and when it was first and last aired in the 17 days.

And darn, just realised that from the 9th to 26th (inclusive) is 18 days not 17. So not only did I communicate badly but I can't count either. :( So it's really 4.28 unique shows per day. And the most repeated shows (6 repeats) would average out to being shown once every 3 days. (Of course often shows are repeated on the same day, so that's not entirely accurate)

Let me know if you're keen to see the list of shows and their repeats and I can either PM it to you or I can try upload it to a site somewhere and link to it. I can produce similar stats for the rest of their stations (assuming they have published show schedules on the TopTV site).

Ah, that makes sense.
In that case, you're right .... a minimum of 4 unique shows every day isn't bad at all.
Any chance I could twist your arm to start doing the same for channels like Fox Retro? :P

Cool, no problem. I currently am doing the evil thing of scraping their "web service" (I use quotes because it's not really a SOAP style web service, but it is kinda a web service)... So I'm just waiting for the "cease and desist" warning. I've tried to limit how often I hit their site to try and make it not invasive (I only run my app once every 2-3 days really hit them once every 10 or so seconds for about 5 minutes). If you can see channel data on their TV Guide, then I'll have the data in my database. Channels like FoxFX unfortunately don't have any data.

Fox Retro had the following stats over the 18 days:
12 shows repeated once
6 shows repeated twice
74 shows repeated 3 times
2 shows repeated 4 times
2 shows repeated 5 times
26 shows repeated 6 times
1 show repeated 8 times
5 shows repeated 9 times
5 shows repeated 12 times

So that's 533 broadcast shows, of which 133 were unique, so that's 133/18 = 7.39 unique shows per day. The 5 shows that were repeated 12 times were 3 different episodes of Buck Rogers, 1 episode of Miami Vice, and 1 episode of The Six Million Dollar Man.

Hope that's enough info?

Great info to have. Thanks so much.
Really, it doesn't seem all that bad. If not for the 'reboot', the schedule would be pretty impressive.
Hopefully in 2.5 months, the reboot will be over and it will all be new content.

Guys if any program is repeated more than 3 times per given month and more than 6 times a year is way to much

ok guys while working on your maths take your given data for repeats and times it now by 4 that is how many times they have been aired. since 1 May to 26 AUG

Hrm, you might be asking for a bit too much there. 3 times per month and people would complain that they can't always get to see the show. If you look at DSTV I'm pretty sure you'll find that their shows and movies are repeated more than 3 times a month. (Especially when it comes to the dedicated movie and series channels)

I'll keep an eye on the stats and see how it works out over a longer period of time, as I said, its a "relatively small sample", so I'm not claiming that it's perfect - I'm just trying to add some concrete data to what so far has been a discussion in the style of "omg, they repeat too much, oh noes, oh noes! I'm gonna cancel my account".

If it turns out that they do repeat a load, I'll probably join the "omg, I'll cancel my account" group... but for now I'll wait to see what the data says.

well I'm still getting TopTV purely for KerrangTV.

My parents-in-law have DSTV and we seldomly watch tv when we there and there series/movies/info channels always repeat stuff. Cant tell how many times I've seen some of History channel shows. The only channels that don't really repeat is the sport channels and even those have repeats.

At least for us "poor boys", we can now also have some series and movie channels and we happy about it.
