Top Ultrabooks this year

Heheheh...

Indeed, but to start the e-peen war measured in millimeters... really ! Does it really HAVE to be thinner than the Macbook Air ?

The heat generated by newer generation low power CPU's is obviously less and aluminium construction helps to dissipate the heat quicker,and besides the cushion puts the keyboard at a more acceptable typing level. ;)

I also thought about it that way but besides for installing games I dont use optical media anymore so I guess I can do without it,yeah sure its not as practical anymore but for me personally I cant see it as a deal breaker.

Thinner looks better and is easier to make lighter,physics will see to that....remember for the structural integrity of a thinner laptop to be kept in check by the chassis it has to handle less shear/stress/strain than for a thicker laptop design.

I usually prefer function over form but in this case function will eventually catch up with form just as it always has in the pc world ;)

If we did not continue making pc's slicker just imagine what we'd be sitting with now.

there is a lenovo that does exactly that. It will be released toward the end of the year with Windows 8...

Aah thanks for sharing that buddy,it seems lenovo is awake afterall! Great idea but I'm not sure about the way they materialized it,wouldn't a screen with a swivel/flip type hinge work better?Would not exactly want my laptop keyboard resting on my lap/cushion.....but good to see somebody thought about this so I have hope finally!Now just going to be patient and then I'll get my first tablet.:D

I guess there is a limit to how thin you need,with smart phones I found a galaxy s2 to be just on the borderline of too thin.The new ones claiming 6.8mm etc are definitely too thin IMO.

With laptops though we haven't reached that milestone yet,I would say that sweet spot would probably be around 10-12mm.

So which ultrabooks have a dvd drive? Besides that ThinkPad x300? I don't like IBM's mouse-track thingy...

"It's not an Ultrabook if it's got a dvd drive" :P

The Samsung 5 Ultra 14" has dvd drives.

The Samsung S Ultra has dvd drives.

So basically:
Ultrabook = thin laptop with no dvd drive
Netbook = small underpowered laptop with no dvd drive
Laptop = laptop :erm: :p

Ultrabook is essentially a type of ultraportable created by Intel, if you want to know what it involves, look here.

No matter how "ultra" it is, without an optical drive it might as well be a 3-wheeled car :p.

Besides games installation and writing the odd cd(which happens not often nowadays since my car radio takes sd cards) I dont use optical media AT ALL.Do you think optical media is that important nowadays to have with you at all times?I'm sure an external could suffice for those rare occasions you do find the need for one?

But that's my point exactly - you'll need to lug around something extra that should be built-in.

I'd rather store it in a bag in the corner and take it out when needed than lug all that extra weight on my lap.....I'm sure there are some people that would need an optical drive a lot more than me but they can always just buy a laptop,still lots and lots of new ones being released.

For me personally these things make sense.

Lol exactly why we are all waiting for stuff like the lenovo ideapad yoga.:D

Look... getting there... thinner tablet from Intel;

Intel Letexo Sliding Utrabook

At IDF Beijing, Intel showed off an almost unique new class of Ultrabook devices which could be sold by various notebook OEMs in the future, codenamed "Letexo". This is a tablet + slider ultrabook, similar in form (albeit larger) to the ASUS EeePad Slider, except that it has an Intel processor inside, and runs Windows 8 (the EeePad Slider was NVIDIA Tegra 2 and Android 3.0 driven). When slid down, Letexo is almost as compact and functional as a tablet PC, with its multi-touch screen, letting you take advantage of Windows Metro UI; when slid up, a keyboard and trackpad are revealed, letting you use it as just another laptop. Perhaps Letexo is intended to be a large-scale effort by Intel to bring about a transition between laptops and tablets, by shaping people's usage patterns towards more touch-based interface.

Screen support / lever / thing looks a liitle iffy in that transition shot... need to work on that.

I still prefer a slate tho'.
