TopTV gets MU channel

It probably makes more business sense for them to show all PSL games live than EPL

Unfortunately this doesn't mean live premiership matches. You are still going to need SS3 and others for that. DSTV has this tied down and know that football subscribers are hostage to them.

Top TV seems blissfully unaware of this. Their PR person stated, no so long ago, that Top TV had no intention of taking DSTV to court over abuse of dominant position etc etc.

Well until they do, they'll have to manage without my custom as I'm stuck with DSTV. Although being stuck with DSTV means I'm not a happy customer of DSTV.

For me what TopTV has said before should not be regarded at all.

A lot of the dynamics have changed as their subscriber base grew from zero to where it is now. Their successful launch certainly raised eyebrows and has given them a lot more muscle than they (or their competitor) expected.

No one saw this scoop coming i.e. MUTV (I certainly didn't) and it just shows you that they are really trying.

With regards to the issue of taking MC to court on the rights issue, I don't think anyone would like to give away their tactics before they are fully prepared. And besides in competitive business, the element of surprise is one of the most effective ways through which to beat competition. So, they might not even need to take MC to court and might have live football on their channel sooner than anyone expected.

P.S. I was going to cancel my R99/mth subscription next month but I no longer will because of MUTV. However, TopTV, I'm not a MU fan so it would not be worth it if I need to upgrade to access it.

Than maybe I'll stay ...otherwise I'm (unfortunately) about to move back to DSTV....

The more obvious questions is: Can they afford to buy those rights if SS were forced to cede some to them? Does SABC 3 still have Monday night games? TTV would do well to get the highlights packages for both EPL & PSL (most of their market is PSL anyway).

Indeed, it makes no sense to disclose commercial strategy. OTOH, the lack of UK football will consign Top TV to a smaller market segment and they won't realise their potential.

Top TV need to look to the UK and particularly study Virgin Media's relationship with Sky TV. Virgin went to court to force Sky to licence sport to them - and won. Now UK viewers have real competition between Sky or Virgin media.

I'm of the view that the backers of Top TV wear blinkers and don't really understand the market dynamics of the business. Look at DSTV Compact, observe that it has SS3 & 4 and then reflect on what market segment DSTV is pitching that product.

It's quite obvious to which market segment TTV hopes to appeal - unfortunately, they don't have the ammunition to get the converts....

I'd like them to succeed, but on current form, its turning into a Neotel.

I am quite sure there are many ways through which to get live broadcasts of games. As it is always in life, there are many ways to skin a cat. Just because they (MC) currently have the rights doesn't mean others cannot access them or that if others need to access them then they can only do so on MC's terms.

Remember, the EPL is not owned by MC. They have the rights yes, but that does not mean that the EPL rights cannot be renegotiated. Look at the issue of the EPL rights that they (MC) lost in Nigeria and recently got them back even before HI TV's contract period had expired. Rights can be renegotiated as the dynamics change in any given country/territory at any given time.

Nothing is cast in stone in this business. Even if there is a contract.
 
I doubt TOP TV will have any success in entering MC's territory as far as the EPL goes.. MC spends a fortune in licensing from the PL, especially now with the 24/7 premier league tv channel.

Which is good for us DSTV subscribers, we still get full coverage, and DSTV costs enough to justify it

Correct! What the courts in the UK did was force Sky to re-sell the programs (at a reasonable rate/profit). The competition authorities realised that if Sky was not forced to re-sell, there would be no competition. Allowing the situation to continue would therefore constitute an abuse of dominant position (a common occurrence here in SA because no-one challenges it, not even Top TV).

Slightly off-topic: Last Mile/local loop unbundelling is an example of an abuse of dominant position.

In Europe the fine for abuse of dominant position is 10% of turn-over, so its a risky business.

Wrong, wrong and wrong.

Point 1: TopTV has already entered MC's territory i.e. premier football broadcast with MUTV,

Point 2: I believe MC is paying a fair price to the English FA for its rights. I'm sure English law sees to this (or at least I hope). However, MC is overcharging you for these rights because you in South Africa(unlike in other countries) have got no option - that is the beauty of monopoly - you rip people off and make them feel grateful for it and

Point 3: The FA knows about the developments that have been taking place in South Africa with regards to satellite TV and are sure to react accordingly possibly wanting to revise agreements made with them before this massive development (massive off course with regards to the broadcasting of their football). Remember, MC's current rights were acquired before TopTV started and alot has changed since.

Not to point out the obvious fact that the EPL is not even in TTV targeted market. They could take something like wednesday local games from the SABC (who door a piss poor job of showing live games when they clash with the bad acting in generations). They obviously can't produce so it would have to be games shown on SS.

We should feel greatful for the amount of european football MC gives us!

The pay tv providers in the uk cant touch supersport in this regard, football in the uk is divided up between bbc/sky/itv/setanta
Atleast we get it from one place, and dont have to search for streams to watch games like they do in england

The only reason why the "EPL is not even in TTV['s] targeted market" is because MonoChoice has made it too expensive for this market to access it.

TTV will make it affordable and therefore accessible to their market (a larger one i.e. not only the well off or people with money to waste on television programmes as opposed to food, clothing, shelter and education, which the EPL will certainly appreciate). TTV's initial statements were only guided by the facts that they did not have these channels and had no muscle with which to get this content. We all know that TTV want to have premuim sport for their target market and now they have got something solid to bargain for it with.

?? BBC & ITV are free (ignoring the licence fee for a moment). Setanta GB is dead since 2009! Sky Sports has the rights to all Premier League matches - like DSTV.

I'm afraid I really can't agree with your statement that Sky (the only Pay TV operator besides Virgin Media) can't touch SuperSport!
