Torrents to hurt DSTV?

Sometimes DStv miss the point... In my view one of the biggest reasons why people use BitTorrent to download TV series for example is because they would like to be up to date with what is being viewed in the US. For example, Prison Break Season 4 is on Episode 10 or something in the states, maybe more, BUT it still hasn't been broadcasted on DStv so people download it cause it is available. Why wait for DStv to get it in March next year for example. If DStv could get the new episodes within a week of broadcast in the States, it would definitely help them...
 
as soon as international bandwidth becomes more affordable dstv can kiss their R523.24 per month from me goodbye :D sick and tired of their nonsense, plus they double billed me this month (debit order) and they don't want to refund my money

My prediction. In the future, we will have talented folk who get together and produce high quality series for the internet, either for free or very cheaply. I could be wrong about the "In the future" part.

Baring in mind that to pay for these show, they would have to have constant in-line advertising which obscures the storyline.

I wonder if the delay in airing shows is a Dstv decision or something that is imposed on them by the US networks?

I definitely think if they kept up to date with the US broadcasts, p2p would much less of a threat to Dstv and also benefit the US networks.
 
I have DSTV at home to watch sport and news. That's 95% of what I use it for. I do however also watch series with my friends. Why? Firstly, I don't have time to stick to a series' schedule on TV and secondly, the time delay issue.... :p
 
Downloading the series is just way more convenient, and my schedule is to crazy to go and make time just to watch a show at a fixed time.
 
Who cares? Monochoice make enough money ripping people off anyway. If their services were a lot cheaper maybe more people wouldn't be downloading stuff.

.....naaaa. Reruns, absolute junk on, way behind with their series...pirate away me harties!
 
It's not the cost as much as the convenience, although I don't think local satellite TV offers much for the money they charge. Whether I rent a series or get it from friends I get to watch as many episodes as I want when I want. I never again want to have to wait a week between episodes because for me it ruins the flow. Even worse is trying to watch them on normal broadcast TV.

I want my movies to have the same aspect ratio as they had in the cinema.

I don't see how they can do it free. The costs to produce this stuff are quite high. Of course the profits are also astronomical, so they may have to accept more reasonable profits, but I don't see how they can just do it free.

We are just spreading the wealth. DSTV already have the monopoly. And this way the broadband companies make more money.

Like broadcast TV where they have breaks between the commercials.

It will be. Even in the US it will be shown on only one channel initially.
 
MultiChoice has already launched cellphone based DVB-H TV services in many countries in Africa, and it is only regulatory constraints which prevents the company from launching a commercial service in South Africa.

I was quite surprised the other day when I suggested to my wife that during this holiday period we re-activate the DSTV. Her response was "Whats the point? They'll show the same sht repeats over and over." Seems like we're on the same page on this at last. To be honest it didn't take much convincing after showing her the options. :D
 
Oh and watching DSTV sport is the most annoying crap ever. I hate how they just scale down the picture and put up banner advertising along the side and bottom quite randomly. Sometimes at crucial times. DONT YOU MAKE ENOUGH FROM SUBS!?!!!? Greedy f-ing pigs.

LOL... I don't watch ANY traditional TV. And the only thing my wife watches is Tuesday night SABC3 (Survivor, Apprentice or Amazing Race). Other than that EVERYTHING we watch comes from the net. We would gladly watch DSTV, but they priced themselves out of the market for us, and we hated all the repeats. We took the DSTV money and just got more bandwidth to download what we want to watch. Then later we buy the DVDs we want to keep for birthdays or Christmas.
