1.5T; 110kw; 210nm

Sounds good

Hopefully they put in production as an SA-exclusive

I hope not, it will be such a waste of a good engine, the Etios should remain as it is and be cheap, Maybe take that engine and turbo and put it in something much better like a Yaris.

Yaris not feasible imo. For this to be a cheap good performance B-segment your base car needs to be cheap.

I've read a few folks who have driven this proto & said it's rather good. It's not just an engine transplant. Goes much deeper than that.

Any interior shots? This car has me very interested for some weird reason.

That is my concern, I don't see Toyota doing anything noticeable to that horrible interior, sort that dashboard and bring it to the standard of the Polo Vivo, that's all I ask.

Just thinking where the power to weight ratio would be against the 86. Also it's odd to see Toyota dabble with a turbo setup in a road car.

Don't understand the hate. My girlfriend drives a 2014 model and its never skipped a beat. Solid little car for the price and the resell value will be really good.

Let’s get technical. The standard 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated 4-cylinder engine from an Etios XS hatch is capable, but never going to provide the entertainment which this market desperately needs. With outputs of 66 kW and 132 Nm, performance is geared towards basic commuting. In terms of performance modifications, turbocharging offered the best bang-for-buck solution and in went a low-boosting turbo, intercooler and free-flowing exhaust and intake. Power is now up to 110 kW and 210 Nm from 0.4 bar boost. Pretorius says that the boost was deliberately kept on the low side for longevity.

We’re at the stage now where some dealerships have expressed serious interest (at least one had signed up at time of writing) and a few orders have been confirmed. There are plans to build 40 units initially, which will reportedly be backed by a competitive aftermarket warranty plan and finance options. It’ll be priced around the R250 000 mark, which is fair given the specification and performance. A Suzuki Swift Sport (benchmarked as the number one rival of the "RSi") retails for R264 900.

HERE’S HOW MUCH THE NEW TOYOTA ETIOS SPRINT COSTS

Last year, Toyota South Africa Motors confirmed that it would launch a new Etios derivative (complete with a “Sprint” badge) in the first quarter of 2017.

And now, ahead of the official arrival of this newcomer, we have managed to source pricing.

Interestingly, there will be a Sprint variant in both the hatchback and sedan body styles, each featuring a completely revamped front end with a sportier front bumper design. In addition, a large lower air-dam, complete with integrated foglamp bezels, is joined by a sharply tapered grille.

Round back, the rear bumper (of the hatchback, at least) gains a fresh lower crease line, while Toyota says the cabin features “improved interior tactile elements throughout” (we also expect a light smattering of added standard equipment). The package is rounded off by twin-spoke 15-inch alloys.

Mechanically, the two new Sprint models are unchanged, which means they both employ the brand’s familiar, naturally aspirated 1,5-litre petrol mill (66 kW/132 N.m) married to a five-speed manual transmission.

So, how much are we looking at? Well, the Etios Hatch 1,5 Sprint will be priced at R172 600 (R8 700 more than the standard Xi model) while the Etios Sedan 1,5 Sprint will come in at R180 500 (an R8 300 premium over the standard Xi sedan).

If you’re familiar with the Etios range, you’ll perhaps notice that these prices mirror those of the Xs models, which appear destined to be replaced by the Sprint derivatives. The Etios Cross 1,5 Xs, however, will still top the line-up.
