my experience with the etios is that the 1.5 motor was pretty nippy but the open road handling is downright dangerous, input on the steering wheel vs whats going on on the road has no relation

My favourite thing on that car is the 1.5 motor, pretty straight forward NA power, nothing much to go wrong there.

Less is more and it couldn't be more true than driving the Toyota Etios Sprint.
'Toyota's Etios Sprint makes for a nifty family car and although it's pretty straight forward, it handles the task of being a superb daily drive,' writes Janine Van der Post.
Available as a hatchback or sedan, depending on your needs, the sedan made for a great family ride.
Prices for the 1.5-litre sedan start at R182 300.
To some, that might sound a bit steep but when you look at the standard goodies it's fitted with, at least compared to rival offerings, you're purchasing a competitively-priced sedan. There are dual front airbags, isofix fittings, basic anti-lock brake system and electronic brakeforce distribution.

SA’s 10 Best-Selling Passenger Cars Of October 2017
October 2017’s aggregate new vehicle sales in South Africa came in at 51 037 units, an increase of 4,6% year-on-year, according to Naamsa.
As always, it’s also interesting to take a look at what’s happening in terms of individual model sales. We’ve already examined the figures and picked out the 10 best-selling bakkies for the month, and now it’s time to do the same with the passenger vehicle market (check out our list of worst-selling cars, too).
Of course, one must bear in mind that certain automakers – such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW – disclose only aggregate sales statistics. Kia and Hyundai, however, thankfully started releasing their individual model sales figures a few months ago, which makes the picture a little clearer.
So, what happened in the tenth month of 2017? Well, rather predictably, the Volkswagen Polo Vivo kept first place, although Toyota’s combination of the Corolla, Auris and Corolla Quest (the brand reports an overall figure rather than individual model sales) managed to move up on to second.
The Toyota Etios, meanwhile, rocketed up three spots to third (more than doubling its sales total month-on-month), which saw the regular Volkswagen Polo relegated two places to the unfamiliar position of fourth. The Toyota Fortuner held steady in fifth, while the Ford EcoSport climbed two to sixth.
The Kia Picanto did enough to retain seventh, while the Toyota RAV4 returned to the table to snaffle eighth. The Ford Fiesta plummeted from fourth to ninth, while the Kia Rio fell one place to take the final spot on the table.
Other interesting figures
So, what else happened in October 2017? Well, Fiat sold 24 units of its revived Panda, making it the brand’s second most popular offering behind the Fiat 500 (32). Ford registered 594 units of the Everest, while the Figo (473) and Focus (298) also contributed to the Blue Oval’s cause. The refreshed Kuga, meanwhile, managed 62 units.
Opel’s top-seller was again the Mokka X (83), while the new Honda CR-V came in with 93 units. Hyundai again enjoyed meaningful contributions from all of its passenger vehicles, with the i20 (640), Tucson (522), Creta (395) and i10 (376) leading the way.
Jaguar Land Rover’s best-performer – by quite some margin – was the new Range Rover Velar (165), with the Discovery (86) next in line for the British brand. Kia managed to sell 161 units of its Sportage, while Mazda counted on its CX-3 (294) and CX-5 (283) for the bulk of its sales.
The new Pajero Sport (27) was Mitsubishi’s second most-popular product for the month, behind the ASX (53). Nissan’s key vehicles all sold well, with the Datsun GO (528), Almera (431), updated X-Trail (396) and repositioned Micra Active (324) doing the heavy lifting for the Japanese brand.
Peugeot totalled 69 units for the month, with the 2008 (26) edging out the 3008 (22) and 208 (21). The Renault Clio (696) came close to grabbing a spot in the top ten, while the Kwid added a further 511 units. Interestingly, two examples of the Koleos were registered in SA in October, suggesting a launch of this SUV may be imminent.
The outgoing Swift (314) showed no signs of letting up, while the new Ignis added a useful 129 units for Suzuki. The Avanza (659) performed well for Toyota, while the C-HR came in with a handy 170 units. The A3 (265) was Audi’s top seller, although the new Q5 also impressed with 134 units. The Golf (676) and Tiguan (336) fared well for Volkswagen in October, while Volvo’s biggest haul came courtesy (as usual) of the XC60, with 40 units.

5 Small Crossovers for Under R200k
A growing number of buyers are looking for a little bit extra from their small hatchbacks, such as a modicum of added ground clearance and eye-catching off-roader inspired kerb appeal. If you're in the market for a new car, here’s how you can get "a lift" while sticking to a budget of R200k.
If you’re looking for a car that's slightly raised because you travel on dirt or badly maintained roads or just like the "ready-for-action-looks" of a faux-4x4 crossover then we’ve compiled a list of interesting models for you to consider. R200k doesn’t go very far, but thankfully a few manufacturers have got creative with their standard models and given them a "raise".
1. Renault Sandero Stepway Expression – R186 900
Although it's not as generously equipped with features as the top-spec Dynamique derivative, the Renault Sandero Stepway Expression is still well-worth considering if you are looking for a basic, small crossover. The Stepway Expression is powered by a 0.9-litre turbopetrol engine that offers 66 kW and 135 Nm of torque and mated with a 5-speed manual transmission.
Key features for this derivative include 16-inch alloy wheels, CD player, Bluetooth, USB and aux input, front electric windows, multifunction steering wheel, 2 airbags, ABS with EBD, brake assist and electronic stability control with traction control.
If your budget can stretch to R201 900, then the Sandero Stepway Dynamique is a good buy and includes additional features such as navigation, cruise control, rear park distance control and 4 airbags. The raised ride height of the Stepway gives it 193 mm of ground clearance, more than enough to traverse a panhandle or hop a kerb.
2. Suzuki Ignis GLX – R191 900
The Suzuki Ignis offers buyers something a little different in this segment of the market. The Ignis is powered by a naturally-aspirated 1.2-litre petrol engine that develops 61 kW and 113 Nm of torque with the front wheels driven via a 5-speed manual transmission. As we discovered during its test period with us, the Ignis offers perky performance in the city and its interior is relatively spacious for its size.
The Ignis GLX is equipped with the features such as a Radio/CD player (can upgrade to a touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), rear park distance control, climate control air conditioning, LED headlights and daytime running lights, 2 airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist.
The entry-level Ignis GL is the current Cars.co.za Consumer Awards – powered by WesBank Budget Car champion and is priced from R171 900. Ground clearance on the Ignis is 180 mm.
3. Toyota Etios Cross 1.5 Xs – R198 100
Toyota added the Cross derivative to its Etios line-up in an apparent attempt to attract more male buyers to its budget-oriented product. The Etios Cross isn’t actually raised over the standard model, but with all the extra cladding it certainly looks more capable at tackling some gravel. In fact, Toyota claims that the Etios was built with extra ground clearance already so it didn’t need an additional raise. With 155 mm ground clearance, it’s still a touch low to be a real crossover, however.
The Etios Cross is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine with 66 kW and 132 Nm of torque on offer. A 5-speed transmission is standard and key features include a Bluetooth radio/CD player, air conditioning, 15-inch alloy wheels, 2 airbags and ABS with EBD
4. Mahindra KUV100 1.2 D75 K6+ - R195 995
The Mahindra KUV100 is a purpose-built crossover-hatch and the range comprises petrol and diesel-engined models. It's surprisingly spacious inside with plenty of areas to store odds and ends. The ground clearance stands at 170 mm and its high-profile 185/65 14-inch tyres should render it quite competent at negotiating small obstacles, certainly gravel roads. The KUV100 is powered by a 1.2-litre turbodiesel engine with 57 kW and 190 Nm of torque while the petrol derivatives offer 61 kW and 115 Nm. The KUV100 comes equipped with 2 airbags and ABS with EBD.
5. Haval H1 – R169 900
With the local arrival of Chinese SUV brand, Haval, in South Africa, its parent company GWM rebadged its M4 as the Haval H1. The H1/M4 is a reasonable rendition of a crossover-hatch. It’s made more to look the part than act it, but it's reasonably equipped and, yes, good looking.
Those daytime running lights are standard, as are the roof rails and 16-inch wheels, plus a 5-year/100 000 km warranty and 2-year roadside assistance that sweetens the deal. There’s good ground clearance (183 mm) and the H1's 1.5-litre petrol engine produces 77 kW and 138 Nm and uses a 5-speed manual transmission to drive the front wheels.

New Toyota Etios Sport quietly arrives in South Africa
Toyota South Africa Motors has quietly added a sixth derivative to its Etios range, applying the “Sport” badge to the hatchback body style and positioning the new limited-edition variant near the middle of the line-up.
Priced at R178 800, the Etios Sport commands a R2 500 premium over the 1,5 Sprint hatch on which it is seemingly based.
So, what sets the new model apart? Well, the new Etios Sport effectively boasts a two-tone paint-job, with the roof (and A-, B- and C-pillars) finished in black as standard.
From what we can tell, the body will be offered in either Glacier White or Retro Red, each paired with the aforementioned black roof. The front grille, meanwhile, is also painted black, as are the side-mirror caps, while a black spoiler has been added round back. Model-specific 15-inch alloys and “Sport” badging are also part of the package.
Standard features carried over from the Sprint trim level include manual air-conditioning, a four-speaker sound system (with USB), front foglamps, dual airbags and ABS with EBD.
Despite its new moniker, the Etios Sport uses the same naturally aspirated 1,5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine as the rest of the range, still sending 66 kW and 132 N.m to the front wheels via a manual five-speed gearbox. And, as with its siblings, the limited-edition Etios Sport is covered by a three-year/100 000 km warranty and a two-year/30 000 km service plan (with intervals of 10 000 km).
Of course, this isn’t the first time Toyota SA has affixed the Sport badge to the Etios: in 2014, the local arm of the Japanese automaker released 200 examples of a variant bearing the same name, complete with an aero body kit and an upgraded sound system.

Go test drive one if you haven't already and then decide. I'd honestly never touch an Etios, they're absolutely horrid cars to drive.

Do yourself a favour and drive it on a road that isn't billiard ball smooth - if you have a radio fitted, see if you can keep the volume the same as it was when the car was standing still..............
Virtually zero sound deadening, shocking finish, however, it is very peppy. Makes an ideal rally car for the entry level competitors, as it goes well, but finish wise does not deserve to be called a Toyota.

Toyota Etios Sport (2018) Specs & Price
Toyota adds a new Sport model to its Etios range. Expect it to join the fray during May 2018.
The Toyota Etios Sport is a new limited edition model bolstering the Etios range. The Sport moniker is used merely to describe the specific look the newcomer dons.
Special additions for the Etios Sport include a two-tone paint job, rear spoiler, special 15-inch alloy wheels and a digital rev-counter. Not to mention the new Sport badge plonked on the rear.
The Sport is only available in two colours, namely Retro Red and Glacier White. The two-tone aspect of the colours involves a black roof accompanying the red or white choice.
The Etios Sport is still powered by the same 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. Complete with 66 kW and 132 Nm and a 5-speed manual gearbox, it makes reasonable forward progress.
Toyota’s new model sits plumb in the middle of the Etios range and comes standard with manual air-conditioning, 4 speaker sound system with USB, front fog lamps, dual airbags and ABS with EBD.

Toyota adds a new Sport model to its Etios range. Expect it to join the fray during May 2018.
The Toyota Etios Sport is a new limited edition model bolstering the Etios range. The Sport moniker is used merely to describe the specific look the newcomer dons.
Special additions for the Etios Sport include a two-tone paint job, rear spoiler, special 15-inch alloy wheels and a digital rev-counter. Not to mention the new Sport badge plonked on the rear.
The Sport is only available in two colours, namely Retro Red and Glacier White. The two-tone aspect of the colours involves a black roof accompanying the red or white choice.
The Etios Sport is still powered by the same 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. Complete with 66 kW and 132 Nm and a 5-speed manual gearbox, it makes reasonable forward progress.
Toyota’s new model sits plumb in the middle of the Etios range and comes standard with manual air-conditioning, 4 speaker sound system with USB, front fog lamps, dual airbags and ABS with EBD.
