Toyota workers down tools in Durban

Members of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa)‚ who are employed by Toyota South Africa‚ have downed tools and embarked on a protected strike on Monday.


Operations at the Toyota South Africa Motors plant in Prospecton‚ Durban‚ and at the warehouse facility in Atlas Road‚ Johannesburg‚ had been suspended.


The union has accused Toyota's management of "stubbornly" refusing to engage with their demands.


"Toyota is an untransformed company which routinely fails Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) compliance targets‚” the union charged.


“They also repeatedly fail to meet their own employment equity targets. This is because there is no political will from the management team to genuinely address these issues‚" said spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola said in a statement.


Hlubi-Majola said the loans given to workers - as a boost to help them following the devastating floods in KwaZulu-Natal in 2017 - must be amended to donations.

This untransformed company must just close their factories in SA and go to another country. Let's see where the locals then get jobs. Time to end the unions in SA.

Numsa can get fscked on the conversion nonsense..... It was a loan like any normal person would have had to get...
 
They further demanded that Toyota should hire 70% contract workers‚ which would be a combination of ex-temporary workers and database‚ and 30% through learnerships.

Other demands included: free medical consultation‚ bonuses to be divided equally between all workers if targets were met‚ transport allowances‚ and quality work wear for both male and female workers.

This goes a long way towards explaining the unemployment rate.
 
Ag, you can clearly see this is nothing about BEE or AA. This is all about the loans they do not want to repay. It is entitlement again believing the money 'borrowed' to them should be theirs and no need to repay it.

Nope, if they do so it's got to do with them getting business from Government. Toyota doesn't need to supply Government, if Government buys from them it's because they want Toyota, not because of a BBEEE rating :)

BBEEE ratings are used as a measure for awarding Government tenders and business. No company in SA is forced to have it.

Then they are stuffed and won't qualify for APDP. Without that they may as close down.

Not denying the benefits at all.

The demand is so great in SA for Toyotas, we will have them locally manufactured or not. I recall there was a massive debate about this last year already.
