The wireless LAN on my laptop doesn't pick up the wireless AP for some or other reason. It doesn't pick up the tp-link or a phone's hotspot.

My question is, is it possible to use a wired connection with this router? I tried it last night, but while it connects, it doesn't go to the internet. I connect to one of the 4 wired LAN ports.

As far as I know, you can have a wired connection. The ADSL modem will plug into the WAN port (blue) and the 3G will be failover. The 4 yellow ports are for for ethernet connections.

I don't know about that R13..., ginggs or Jola might know, but I don't.

I have found the MR3420 to be problematic and unstable at the best of times and I struggled to get my modems working properly on the damn thing. It now gathers dust (not heavy enough for a door stop). I will take it out if my current router fails - so it will serve only as a back-up.

Just a lil off topic, I had a similar thing happening to me with my Intellinet router (also wireless 3G as the MR3420). It refused to connect to the internet and after some trouble-shooting with the guys at Intellinet, we established that there was a hardware failure. This is about 4 yrs after purchase. I thanked them for their super after sales service and thought that was the end of that. The gent from Intellinet responded prompmtly that I must just take the unit back to the supplier and have it replaced. I did not know that the unit carried a lifetime warranty. The gent told me if I encounter any problems with the supplier that he will get involved personally. On that note, maybe check the warranty on your unit - maybe it is a hardware failure and you can have it swopped out.

That should work. Are you getting the correct IP settings via DHCP from the router?

The router works via wireless, because I use it on a Mac, phone & a tablet. It is my laptop's wireless that's buggered which is why I'm looking at the wired connection. What I do notice is that when I connect wired, the LAN connection on the laptop doesn't show the configured SSID it shows a default'TP_LINK_Xxxx'.

Is there some configuration required for an internet connection through ethernet? I must add that I can view the router on 193.168.x.x when I connected on the wired cable, just no internet/

Yes, but how I can't help. Just some clarification:

If router supports it, the easiest way is to put router in bridge mode and dial from laptop.

Otherwise (more common), router needs to be configured (firewall, etc..) and one of the 3G dialing mode. Router is dialing in this case, remember. On Laptop you need to setup deafult gateway (routers IP address - not a routers IP configuration page - there are different things)

Plus typical for LAN subnet (IP address an mask combination) must be configured for each device to be in visible range. Or activate DHCP server on the router and use it on all devices.

BTW, there is no SSID on wired Ethernet. Don't need to worry.

Thanks sajunky, I will have a look at the TCP/IP settings on the ethernet port. I may have fixed them when setting up the router a long time ago. I will switch to DHCP def.

R13,
Make sure you are using DHCP on the laptop.
The cable is working if you can see the router settings.

There may be but I would doubt it that it does not allow cable connections to access the internet.

Let us know what happens with DHCP on the Ethernet connection.

Regards

Tim

Yup, turns out I left the LAN on manual TCP/IP settings. Changed to DHCP and all working now.
