No one is disputing the law itself, or the matter of breaking it. What we are discussing is the enforcement of this law.

If you do not break the law, then there should be no running into the run to stop you, right? Or are they out to get you?

You must have missed a post or two. They don't only sit next to highways. And when they do, it's not even close to where you should be driving. And they don't 'run into the road with cars' on a highway to flag you down, your picture gets taken. So anyone who hits a cop there, is a bad driver or was not paying attention and should not have been driving at that time.

As for flagging down on urban roads, you can see them coming a long way ahead, and you know exactly when you're being flagged. If you miss that and still manage to hit the guy, you must have been speeding excessively and swerved out to hit him (because I'm sure they will move out of the way if they see you're not going to stop), or just plainly didn't look where you were driving. Negligent and bad driving either way.

I've personally witnessed pigs waving down cars from the freeway side, numerous freeways, numerous occasions.

No, actually I don't. There've been times when I was driving and suddenly the cop springs out and it wasn't for me, one time both me and the guy in front of me had to take corrective measures and slow down because the pig was so defiantly waving at the guy behind us that he didn't seem to see us and was getting dangerously close to being in the way.

I don't know what you're arguing and I don't think you do either. There are undeniably other, better, safer ways for cops to be enforcing the law. If this is their best decision, then the consequences are on them - and all those deaths we see every festive season (coming soon to an Easter near you), that's also a direct result of their incompetent law enforcement. It's pretty much proven ineffective as a deterrent, and is clearly not improving road safety for drivers OR them.

I would like to just highlight the ludicrous hypocrisy people are showing here. Bolded above we have killadoob's wish that someone's loved one be hurt. Why is this his wish? Because he thinks it's bad that other people are laughing at cops being run over on the job. Let's note that nobody has said "I wish this happened to all cops" or "I wish cops horrible bloody deaths", it was at most a case of "got what was coming".

We all have choices in life, Smoothie. If she was really opposed to running into the road with speeding cars, she shouldn't have been in that position in the first place. She was not enlisted or ordained from Above to be an officer, she chose it.
As far as income not going to her... gimme a break. Either directly via bribes, or indirectly via paid salary, she's making herself money. Are you really that naive?

Let me suggest an alternative scenario, one where pigs (and when I refer to pigs it is to Metro "police" only) actually give a **** about driver's safety; what if, what if, they simply patrolled 'high-risk' areas, lights flashing? Hmm? What if they simply provided VISIBLE presence? No, there wouldn't be a lot of income, though they'd be better positioned to deal with offenders, and their own safety would not be such a concern.

Amen. While my OP could be considered harsh, the comments in response are much more revealing. Never thought I'd see so much time and effort put into defending the speed police.

Imprisoned, no. Fined, unfortunately, yes. What gets to me is that I have to worry more than the unlicensed oke in the clapped out jalopy that can barely move at the minimum highway speed who has not a care in the world. Who is the danger there? Me at 140 in a 120 zone, or him, at ~80, probably in the middle lane??

I drive at a speed where I feel I am in control, and where I am not a danger to those around me. That is higher in most areas than what the govt. seems to think it is. Am I reckless and drunk? WTF? Do I need to even answer that?

Doesn't mean you actually are and secondly you fail to consider other motorists who you have no control over. They could put you in a situation where your speeding has a direct influence on whether you crash or not. Furthermore your speeding determines the extent of injuries you and/or others suffer as a consequence.

A very childish response. Everyone hates speedtraps, even me, because I don't see the use of them other than making money, but wishing injury/death upon someone that you probably have never even met, or laughing at their misfortune, it pathetic. Grow up.

Speed traps are a good thing, traffic law enforcement is a good thing, WHEN PROPERLY ENFORCED.
It really is a sad matter that this lady got hurt, no laughing matter indeed. I guess I got harassed once too many by them and because of that have no faith in the general traffic dept, AT ALL. Hence the reason for my response.

Just so that we can be clear on this: I do not wish injury/death upon them, nor do I laugh at their misfortune.

The news report is too vague to come to any conclusions as to what really happened. You really cannot believe everything you read on the net.

I'm not defending traffic officers, I hate speeding tickets because it is profiteering, and nothing else. The debate is actually not whether it's a good thing or not, but whether it's right to laugh at an officer's misfortune due to bad driving from road users.
