Transparent Proxy Issues

Iburst and filehosting sites

Why do the majority of filehosting sites not work with Iburst? Is Iburst perhaps purposely making them unusable? Reason I say this, is because a couple months ago I complained that netload wasnt working. Then Rooi "looked into the matter" for which I am very grateful, then all of a sudden it started working. :wtf:
P.S. netload isnt working anymore because of the problem mentioned below.

The rest of the filehosting sites only allow one download per IP address which I assume is being shared by all Iburst users because I have been trying to download from various ones and they keep telling me that there is already a download in progress from the IP I'm using. But I know this is BS as well, because they all have a countdown timer that tells you when you can start downloading again, and for the past two months I have not managed to download from any of them after trying to download as the timers hit zero.

The affected filehosting sites are (amongst many many many others): filesonic, fileserve, netload, turbobit and many others.

There is one file hosting site that does work constantly for me, but I would rather not mention it here because it may just stop working when I get home

So what are others experiences? What file hosting sites DONT WORK for you (please dont mention the ones that work).

We are in the process of updating our core equipment to cater for this. The hardware has arrived and it's just a question of it being scheduled.

Few questions Rooi:

1. So you admit there is a problem?
2. The current core equipment is to blame?
3. Estimated time when new core equipment will be installed?

I had the same problem as you. If you can, get a premium account on the file hosting sites you use the most. That will maybe be your best option at the end.

I was trying to download a file this weekend using Cell-C, the file had been uploaded on multiupload so the file was available on rapidshare, megaupload, depositfiles, hotfile, zshare and uploading.
I tried all of them, most had some ridiculous timer, some said I was already downloading a file others said my country was downloading too many files. I think all the waiting and error messages are just a way to get you to spring for a premium account.

The problem with 196.2.126.175 is not just with filehosting sites: it also affects legitimate use of sites on systems that employ spam-blocking filters. I can't access the open-access parts of the academic databases (ancient Greek literature, and a dictionary of that language) at http://www.tlg.uci.edu/ - keep getting 403s - and an administrator of that site has confirmed that this is because the IP is blacklisted by the university's system. If you want to see for yourself why, try entering it at http://www.stopforumspam.com/search.php for example, or see http://www.stopforumspam.com/ipcheck/196.2.126.175

I tried downloading a 5MB file from megaupload, it kept telling me my IP address, 196.2.126.175, was already downloading a 200MB .mkv file.
I switched over to Cell-C and was able to download the file after the usual timers and pop-ups.

Edit: It seems the problem is that these sites are ignoring the the X-Forwarded-For HTTP header field. The reason they do this is simply that X-Forwarded-For is easily faked, as explained here.

It turns out that Cell-C also use a transparent proxy and I was just very lucky this morning in being able to download the file. Cell-C's proxy currently does not bother to insert the X-Forwarded-For field.

If you want to verify this yourself, try checking what IP address is used to actually establish connections to web servers here or here, and then checking what HTTP headers are being sent to web servers here or here, compare these values to your actual IP address.

What happened to my thread about filesharing/hosting websites

I started a topic asking why the majority of filehosting/sharing websites (e.g. filesonic etc) dont work with IBurst. Got an answer from Rooigev@@r that the cause is old/faulty equipment that they are in the process of replacing.

Just want to know when the new equipment will be working?

P.S. What happened to my other thread :wtf:

Bump...Why?? because it's still a MAJOR issue.
Have you tried contacting the webmasters of the sites you are having trouble with and requesting they unblacklist iBurst's proxy?

The standard reply goes something along the lines of : 'You ISP is working via a Proxy. Purchase a premium account to avoid problems like these'
My issue is that with a number of other ISP's I never encountered this problem. (Telkom is one of the notable exceptions, whilst Afrihost worke like a dream)
Purchasing a premium subscribtion to 5 or 10 different file hosting services is not a viable option for me.
Strange thing is that +- 2 years ago and longer I never experienced this specific problem with iBurst.

Rooi has already admitted that it is due to a hardware problem on iBurst's side, new equipment has been ordered and shipped to rectify it, but those of us affected are still awaiting a concrete ETA for resolution on this issue.

That's typical Telkom/Microsoft style suggestion from you. Blame everyone else and point fingers to anyone else when it's clearly an iBurst issue and been admited so.

Most ISPs use transparent proxies, and most websites don't have a problem with this.

The problem with these file sharing sites is that they are trying to sell a service to people who clearly don't want to pay for anything, so their only option is to use countdown timers, throttling and connecting limiting by IP address to try and coax you into paying for their service.

The only exception I have seen in this thread is Psychopompous' case, which I'm sure could be solved by a polite email to the site's webmaster.

bump.
When will core equipment be "scheduled"?

This isn't a little Netgear that they can just quickly plug in... This is serious hardware.
There is lots of planning involved in doing this properly. They could rush into it but you'd probably end up without any iBurst service for 2 or 3 days if they did that.

Patience ;)
