My faith in the Competition Commission might just be restored. Now all I want to ask the CC is to start with Telkom , next the Mobile Operators.

Telkom, I think, as a huge role to play in the high comms costs which are inflicted on us poor beings! When they get to the likes of Vodacom & MTN, lets take a hard look at those interconnect fees.

It's not enough to find them guilty if there is no real change forced on them.

The CompCom is certainly showing some teeth, and I just hope that tribunal chairman David Lewis is there to stay for some time. Over the last year or so they have done a few good things, including taking executives to task who try to lie to the tribunal (always candy coated in legal or corporate speak). I would love to see executives and directors held to account for any price fixing in their company!

This is awesome news. Hopefully David Lewis gets exactly what he asking for. People like Telkom CEO's and Mobile Operator CEO's belong in Jail as far as I am concerned. They are literally digitally raping the public!! I am all behind the CC.

Given the voting we agree they are guilty, but its forcing compliance... telkom can just ignore and/or litigate any decision they don't like.

Complaint after complaint about the high cost of the telecommunications industry. Then Telkom sells its share in Vodacom and now the Competition Tribunal gets unleashed. Perhaps being a little cynical but the timing of all of this is a little odd.

And if you are dishing out fines - go claw the money back from the share holders first.

The Competition tribunal have shown to be independent in the past - I just hope they take the big boys on and in the process we will also benefit on cheaper telecom prices.

Covering SA’s trade and industry in general, Lewis said the state of competition remained a cause for considerable concern. “In the space of the last 12 months we have dealt with the full gamut of cartel conduct — price-fixing, market allocation, bid-rigging — in industries ranging from bread to scrap metal, from pharmaceuticals to pipes and culverts, and a great many more proven and alleged cartels. The impact of these on the poor and on the taxpayer is immense.”

Funny.. i remember all these 'events' especially the bread one, yet post enforcement + fine the price of bread remained exactly where it was. Fines need to be either a whole heck huger than 10% or more enforced regulation. Its funny how in other parts of the world decent profit is good enough but in SA it seems like companies want to make profit comparable to international counter parts even after currency conversion or something.

It will be a bun fight until it is legislated... who has jurisdiction in the telecoms sector? ICASA or the Competition Commission/Tribunal?

Currently it is ICASA - and we know how effective they are!

If they can hand out prison sentences the whole picture will change. You try and do something anit-competetive if your looking at a 5-10 year stint in prison with a cellmate named Butch.

At the end of the day I would take them over Icasa anytime. Bunch of incompetent morons there who couldn't fight their way out of a wet paper bag!

Wouldn't it be nice.... if the government dropped their shares in Telkom and seized Telkom's infrastructure (which was paid for by tax payers as far as I know) and used all profit from the infrastructure to maintain and expand and upgrade it.
