Mxit and SMS are two totally different types of service but what I was getting at was that most Mxit users dont even know what MSN is let alone grasp the concept of IM. They do how ever see it as an alternative to SMS and as a way to get your message to someone for cheap. Some people log into to Mxit the whole day and use it to "SMS" eachother. My other point is that the almost viral nature in which Mxit was adopted as an alternative form of communication should be a warning to the mobile operators . MVOIP as I see some call it, could quickly escalate into another alternative mechanism for communications.

Johand you make a few very valid points though. Symbian is another beast and it might be a year or too before everyone has phones that are capable of running MVOIP apps. (J2ME anyone ) Even I thought about a MVOIP Java based client when VOIP was first unbanned here in SA, unfortunately I didnt have time to take it further. I suspect many other guy also thought of it, but why not try and do it on J2ME. I havent researched the technology much so I cant say for sure if there are any technical problems but surly a Java client should be feasable. Even if it looks but ugly like Mxit does at least it could still work.

If these guys won awards and stuff it doesnt mean that they will come out tops. Personally I am wondering if they arent just running with success without actually asking themselves the really scary question we are all thinking. What if it all fails. I think to be fair we should give them a chance, Mxit got a lot of crit from a lot of people and they made it inspite of the problems. Maybe some of us are a bit jealous that other people beat us to implementing obvious ideas we had for a long time but thats the way it crumbles. They are young and have enthusiasm and have a real product and it should work, If it does fail I hope they open source the whole thing....

On the issue of not posting your contacts info I think its matter of privacy.I do think that it can be ridiculous in some cases though because it would be nice to talk to some people like maybe via an email address or something in some instances.

And MXiT is not making much money as far as I understand.

My point is not that their technology is flawed. My point is just that with the technology they are working with, they can get a better angle to enter the market. I would like nothing more than see a big fight against the networks. Unfortunately they will need cash for that fight.

The technology they are working with has many applications outside pure VoIP. And lots of companies are prepared to put real money down for mobile products.

Mxit is terrible at the best of times. I use it since its the only way for me to get in touch with some people I know, since they are always logged in. I hate it when messages don't go through and when it doesnt deliver messages to users when they come on line. Its very unreliable at times which has often made me think I should take a sabatical and brush up on Java and develop a competing product that works properly. I would call my enhanced fully functional system "Fxit"
