Hi there

I'm currently running a dual monitor display using a Nvidia GeForce 8500GT graphics card (one 23" monitor and one 17"). My motherboard has onboard graphics and I always assumed I'd be able to add a third monitor using the onboard graphics, but now I see that it isn't possible? I'm using an Asus P5KPL-CM motherboard.

I just want to be able to add another 17" monitor - no fancy gaming / CAD design or anything, i just want to have another screen. Is there a work around to get my onboard and nvidia graphics to talk to each other? If not, could someone please suggest a *cheap* graphics card that I could buy that would work with my current set up.

Thanks:)

AFAIK you can't put the onboard on at all if you use a graphics card. The best you can do is to either get a PCI graphics card or to look at a USB alternative- it allows you to add extra screens via USB. Not sure what it costs though.

yeah, if you wanna use 2 or more screens as 1, you gonna have to buy an expensive piece of hardware which divides the signal between the 2+ screens and 'tricks' the graphics card into thinking that it's one MASSIVE screen and not 3 small ones.

ya, R4000+ isn't really in the price range hey;) isn't it possible to just buy another cheap nvidia graphics card? I dont need to fool the computer into thinking I have only 1 monitor, I just want to use the normal "extend desktop" functionality on 3 monitors.

I think that VERY few people use more then 3 monitors and because of that, you gonna need to spend money on that specialist equipment

The way I did it, was run my main monitor on my PCI-E card (Gigabyte 3D-X1, in SLI mode it only runs one monitor) and then I had an extra PCI card, and old Radeon 7000 (and you can still buy these from alot of places, just gotta look around), and that ran my other 2 monitors. I would have an extra one of these to run another two monitors, but needed to have my Audigy plugged in somewhere.

So I can just buy another graphics card and plug it in? or will only some motherboards work? (sorry I'm clueless here)

Another thought - I see my graphics card has a svideo connector in addition to the DVI and VGA connectors that already run my two monitors. Couldn't I get an S-vido to VGA connector and run a third monitor off the graphics card I already have?

I'm not sure, it worked perfectly on mine, and I can't see why it wouldn't work perfectly anywhere. Just make sure to get a PCI card and not a PCI-E card...

As for the S-Video out, that would only clone your primary monitor and not extend your desktop to a third monitor.
