TRLTech

That doesn't explain how I, during a week day, have speeds of +/- 25 KB/s on my TRLTech account while my friend has > 300 KB/s. That seems to indicate that Afrihost somehow has less additional shaping than TRLTech's non-existent additional shaping.

My experience has been that during a week day, about 7:00 to 17:00, the line is shaped* to +/- 25 KB/s. On the weekend and during about 17:00 to 1:00 on week nights, the speed goes up to +/- 180 KB/s. Between about 1:00 and 7:00 is the only time I get speeds close to, or above, those my friend gets all the time on his Afrihost account.

Is it possible that Afrihost's wholesale bandwidth is less shaped than TRLTech's?

The most frustrating thing for me, is the browsing experience. Which is what these cheap uncapped accounts are supposed to be prioritised for. To elaborate, when viewing an image or video the first few KB of data load really fast and then the rest chugs along. I am basically getting a glimpse of the potential speed of the line I am paying Telkom for.

*I wouldn't strictly call this shaping, because no ports or protocols altogether exceed this speed, but using the word throttled seems to make ISPs very defensive.

There have been many debates on the shaped uncapped issues in the past. Each ISP has their ups and downs when it comes to comparing shaped uncapped accounts. At the end of the day it all comes down to how an ISP manages their wholesale bandwidth. Afrihost manages their own bandwidth while we leave our bandwidth management in the capable hands of IS. Afrihost and various other ISPs have FUP or Fair Use Policies that let a client download about 30GB then they throttle / lower the account speed. We on the other do not have a FUP and do not care if a client downloads 3GB or 300GB. At the end of the day you must take a decision and decides whether you want:

Uncapped with full speed but with throttling
Uncapped that always on and can burst to the maximum line speed

You must keep in mind that the shaped uncapped solutions was designed for basic web surfing and e-mails. Nothing more, nothing less. If you require an uncapped account for online gaming etc then I suggest you have a look at our Express account offerings.

What download speeds are you guys getting over ftp on 4meg lines?

Also why do I still keep getting a login.php file download through IE when I try download files ?

And FDM says the site does not support resume either.

It seems that FDM somehow cannot detect the correct settings for Torrentflux. I'm using Internet Download Manager and just downloaded a file from your folder via http. IDM shows that resume function is on:

I've then downloaded the same file via normal FTP:

In order to download your Torrentflux files correctly via FTP, enter the following address in your web browser:

ftp:// username : password @ torrentflux.co.za (without the spaces)

Username: Your Torrentflux username
Password: Your Torrentflux password

If done correctly, you should be able to view your downloaded files in your web browser via FTP. Once you click on a file, FDM should pick up the correct settings.

Hmm, logged in just now and I see only my files and nobody elses unlike before where it showed all the torrents on the server. Is it gonna stay that way from now on?

I prefer it like that.

I've changed the configuration to show all files again. Would you guys prefer to to be able to download from other user directories as well via FTP? Is so, I can change the configuration so that you can - let me know ;)

Reuben, I still can't get in to ftp, not through FileZilla or using ftp:// username : password @ torrentflux.co.za (without spaces)

I see a problem with that though, if person A downloads a torrent and person B then sees the torrent and wants to download it, how will person A know that he must not delete the files yet?

I normally delete the files as soon as I'm done downloading them so that it doesn't take up space.

You don't have to delete the files after you are finished downloading. We actively monitors the disk space and would schedule website maintenance which would include deleting old files from the server. Don't worry, we'll let everyone know well in advance when maintenance will be taking place :)
