Hi,

I have noticed my ADSL is somehow slower, despite copper cables here being replaced, after they were damaged. I wanted to check my speed on speedtest.net, and the page has been loading for the past 5 minutes.

I did a tracert to their

My Line stats are:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 384 kbps 128 kbps
Line Attenuation 30.0 db 17.5 db
Noise Margin 29.8 db 22.0 db

What is up with my ADSL connection? I use TelkomInternet.

Hi there Line attenuation and noise are fine if not excellent.

Has it improved today?

Yes, It has improved today, speedtest loads in less than a minute, I did a speedtest for today.

I was getting 0.19 down and 0.10 up on the day when speedtest was not loading.

Speedtest does not load on my Afrihost uncapped or capped accounts.

It loads on my FNBConnect account only.

Must be something wrong somewhere

I am with Afrihost at home and Speedtest loads fine for me. It just gave me .33 down and .10 Mbps on my 384 unshaped connection with Afrihost.
Telkom is doing a lot of work replacing and upgrading copper connections around older suburbs. They have been doing a lot of work around me this week climbing poles and replacing connection boxes. Maybe that had something to do with your connectivity Cookiemonster?
Follow me @TechXperTim

Probably, but a few weeks ago, probably 4 weeks ago, there was no telephone and ADSL in my area. Telkom said the copper cables in the area had been damaged, and they took 3 days to replace coverage. Shouldn't my ADSL be better? I assume they placed new copper cable for the damaged bit.

Speedtest is a great tool for giving a basic idea, but one must also bear in mind that it is a site like any other. If everyone in Guateng decided to run a speedtest at the same time, the site will not load, or the reported data will be skewed. The are many ways to judge actual speeds, and there are also many variants of speedtests like MyBB or SAIX, and all will report different results.

Just a thought ....
