Hi All,

I have been trying to sign up with 8ta for 3 weeks. I filled in all the forms and was interested in the "Contract 2" with the Nokia N8. http://www.8ta.co.za/plans/plan/contract-2
Last week I recieved a one line email:

"The Nokia N8 has been discontinued. There is technical problems with the phone. "

Sounds a bit flaky but I accepted this and asked what phones are available and if I would get a voucher for the difference if I chose a cheaper phone. Its been over a week now and no reply...

What can I do now? Give up?

I started at a shop. Filled in all the forms. Was told it would take 3 days. Kept going back for 2 weeks, standing in queues just to be given more excuses. Eventually I asked for the email address of the person helping me so that I didn't have to go back to the shop all the time!

Hi
Please email the shop details, your contact number, your ID number and a description of your experience to [email protected]
We would like to investigate.
Thank you

Another week has past. I tried changing the Nokia N8 for a HTC Mozart. Guess what, 'that phone is discontinued' !!!! It seems that all the higher end phones advertised on the 8ta website are just shown to lure new customers and they don't actually plan on giving them away on contract. I tried the email address above as suggested by the 8ta rep on this forum. No reply....

Well I'm off to the ASA website to fill out a complaint for false advertising. Will most likely visit Hellopeter as well. I see 8ta already has 260 complaints!

Any progress

Hi there,

Was wondering if you've had any luck with this query?

Regards

Yes. Took about a month but eventually I was contacted by someone from the 8ta store in Pavillion, Durban. They had heard about my complaint from 'head office'. They got me a HTC Mozart from another store at pavillion and sent it down to me (I'm in Richards Bay).

Hey Striker

Thanks for the reply. glad to hear you are sorted out. I am actually looking into getting the N8 from 8ta (that's how I landed on your thread) but have been told by someone in the Telkom Direct store that they have all been sent back with some software error. She said she'd phone me this week but from reading all the complaints on HelloPeter that seems unlikely.

I'm in Cape Town but maybe I should try that store in Durban, haha.

Another thing you can try is Nashua mobile. They will sell you the N8 on the 8ta contract. I was going to do this but for some reason they would not port my number from Vodacom.

I called your Rosebank shop during August, only to be confronted with an answering service. Left a voicemail and waited for 2 days, without a response! (In fact, 6 weeks later, they have still not responded.)

I then drove a long way to get to the shop, only to be told that they were out of stock of the Nokia N8!! They told me to try Cresta.

I eventually got the same phone from Vodacom.

Your website still offers the N8. I believe this is false advertising??

Anyway, I am thinking of getting your 10gig (R199 p/m) package at the end of November, but my dealings with your people, thus far, have not been very encouraging.

What to do?

I went to Nashua Mobile Claremont but they did not have the Nokia N8 available and will only be updating their special this Friday, 07/10/2011 as they don't seem to carry all the 8ta packages with all the phones at any given time.

I am also with Vodacom at the moment so wondering if they will also not port my number? Will have to ask them.

Thanks for the replies so far StrikerZA.

Kind regards

The gears may turn slowly but they do turn and you should eventually get the phone you want. For me it was worth the wait as they must be heavily subsidising the handsets to sell them at the advertised prices. Vodacom doesn't come close. Guess it explains the R900million rand loss Telkom just declared!

Nashua Mobile still does not carry the Nokia N8 on their 8ta specials. Shouldn't they just be able to give you the phone (from whoever else supplies it to them BUT 8ta) and a package from 8ta?

Writing an email to 8ta now to find out what's going on.

Any updates from other users on the forum?

In other news, I went to Vodacom today in Centurion, chose my phone, signed a contract and recieved my phone within 15 minutes of entering the shop...
