Making gold in WoW is all situasional and you need to be prepaired for when the gold train comes in. The next one would be Cataclysm. Read up on it as much as you can. Then stock up on items people will use to power level their proffs. Like when WoTLK cam eout every second guy wanted to be an engineer to make the chopper. Mats where insanely priced. So read up on all the news charges to proffs and then if you find something that will trigger their fancy in a said proff then stock as many mats as you can ;)

The Chopper has gone from 20k - 15k in pricing since the start of WotLK...It's still a very expensive mount (vendor bought mats are something like 12k alone)

I am looking forward to the profession changes in Cata
 
I play on a med-low pop server, so keep that in mind.

One thing that worked for me (although it costs real money) is to make myself a decent bundle of starting gold through mining+JC+Alchemy (Transmute master). 20k Gold should be enough to start off with. You can make 20k gold in about 2-3 weeks with mining and Alchemy alone (Farm Saronite, Smelt then Transmute Titanium bars) sells like hotcakes.

Now that you have your startup gold (lulz) do a char x-fer to a high pop server (Tarren Mill worked best for me) with all your gold. It doesn't have to be a high level character that you X-fer, any char that can reach an AH relatively easy is ok. Go to the auction house and scan for BoE epics and Primodial Saronite. On high pop servers these usually sell at way below what a low pop server would sell them at due to the amount of drops and farming from more people. Buyout as much lewtz as you can, keep relogging to other character on low pop server to see if you're making a profit (I would never buyout anything if I'm not making at least a good 500g margin profit on it).

Take lewtz, do a character x-fer back to your old server and auction your goods. Profit.

Keep in mind, this is not a good time now to do this as we are reaching the end of the expansion. About a month into Cataclysm is a good time to try this out.

Just some advice I thought I'd share. Has been working great for me this whole expansion :)

and how much does a character transfer cost!?

spend money in real life to make money in wow??? Might aswell BUY GOLD!???

Off my head now not really.

I will have to log on later tonight to see what I think will make you good gold on Transmute. I'm a flask master so I hardly ever transmute.
I know that I did tranmute the Gem used to +30 stamina allot, made 120g a day from that transmute alone. (Kings amber maybe?) Now if you are spec'd for Transmute you should make double that on your transmutes. Problem is it has a 20 or 24 hour CD :(

I'll have to check but I'm pretty sure it was King's Amber.

Yeah, if you chose to opt for buying gold. However, this isn't against the ToS, buying gold is.

I have made tons of gold using this method. Not saying that it's viable for everybody, just a tip.

Cardinal Ruby sells best on my server (200g minimum uncut). Requires 1x Eternal Fire 1xScarlet Ruby.

Transmute mastery doesn't double every transmute. It has a chance to, but doesn't necessarily proc more than one every transmute. Transmute mastery is of most benefit when Transmuting Saronite Bars> Titanium bars, as the quantities you'll be transmuting gives more opportunities to proc multiples.

I've got herbalism, so I usually have excessive amounts of eternal lifes, so I usually transmute autumn's glow to king's amber. Scarlet ruby -> cardinal ruby used to be the most profitable per transmute, but their price seemed to have dropped quite a bit.

Gathering the eternals are usually quite easy if you have WG, since there are elementals spawning that has a 100% droprate for the crystallized element. If your factions don't have it often, it gets trickier. The lesser elementals have a smaller droprate, but they are grouped together. There are also a couple of places that you can farm eternals. On the top of my head, I can only recall a cave in NE Stormpeaks where a lof of fire elementals spawn with a rather high respawn rate. This was several months ago, so it might have changed somewhat.
 
Why so concerned about making bucket loads of gold? I gave about 5k and it's enough.

If have alchemy and herbalism then your raiding is cheaper because your flasks last twice as long. You can transmute your own epic gems to keep your gear properly gem'd. I keep a stock of 10 frost lotus and about 5 of each epic gem and sell the rest. I have 6 lvl 80's, all with epic flying skill. 1 or 2 hours of dailies with lvl 80 herbalist and I easily make 200g a night. One thing I NEVER do, is buy gear off the AH, especially epic. It's so easy to get gear with badges. And spending real cash for wow gold is just plain stupid, not only because it's against the ToC, buts it's so easy to accumulate in the ordinary course of game play.

This is the best advice. I never buy gear on AH also, well for my alts yes, but not top end gear.
 
I can't wait to get to NR with my Warrior. Making 3k gold by making a chopper is going to bank roll all my toons :D I just need 12k gold to get the business started :o But hey, I farm 12k then just make 1 bike a day and that should rake me in at least 3k per day if they sell. Which on my server they do, you never see any on AH for very long. Other people will buy gold to pay for my choppers :p
