Tshwane - Pretoria

I wish I could act like a school teacher and grip these stupid politicians ears and twist them for being petty and childish...

These name changes are just wasting BUCKET loads of money... there is obviously the redoing of all signage, and maps... but then every single business has to redo official letterheads and signs as well to reflect their "new" location... Of course what amuses me is renaming something like "Smith Str" in Durban cos it represents some British war-hero in the Anglo-Boer war IIRC. personally (and I have british roots and my grandfather was HEAVILY into the history of the boer and zulu wars,) I never even had a clue, smith str is just a generic name as far as i was concerned.

I live in PRETORIA and there is no way I'm gonna tell people I live in the capitol of the RSA, Twane...How lame is that? What is the name change for, anyway?

I doubt they'll ever get the name changed...to many people stay here and to many people who don't will protess!

They should change it and make it stick!

They will change it, and it will stick, it is understandable, it is human nature to be afraid of change, but in time people will get used to it

People talk about Centurion, not Verwoerdburg, and Polokwane, not Pietersburg, and Limpopo, not the Northern Province - people talk about Joburg International, not Jan Smuts Airport, before long people will talk about OR Tambo Int'l, Tshwane, Ekhuruleni, Ethekwini, even Bela-Bela is becomming the name used more than Warmbaths.

Nobody can prove to me that the name change of Pretoria is official. Until that time, I'm still living in Pretoria. Besides, I'm not even interested in knowing how to pronounce Ekhuruleni and Ethekwini (dlk001: hopefully the people that will know how to say it will be able to point it out to lost souls on a map - if they read maps that is) I don't know where these places are. They should keep linking the old name with the new name. And there is a difference between getting used to something new (changing the capitol city, passing a new law or making use of Internet 2.0) and calling grass blue unfortunately.

I think they should come up with new name for AIDS (eShowa-Showa) while they're at it. And why not a cool black name for affirmative action (Ncompeetencee). How about a name for so-called African maths? (Wonplaswon). South African jails anyone? (Holeeday)

Government claims that these new names are the names that black people have always called these things by, at least in most cases.

Thus I see no problem with calling Pietersburg by the name I know it by. Same goes for Warmbaths, or the East Rand, or even Jan Smuts airport.

Then by your own argument, why don't people just "get used" to Pretoria?

In the case of Tshwane, nobody seems to know who Tshwane was or where he was supposed to have lived. It makes a mockery of explanations like that.

I was under the impression that Tshwane was Shaka's favourite bull and they found his bones buried near the Apies River. :o

Yes nobody will stop you from using your beloved old names even though there's new OFFICIAL names.

Which are wasting precious tax money that could be better spent on uplifting the communities etc....

What nobody seems to get is that MOST "white" people have no problem with the name changing, but its a complete WASTE of money at this point in time, that money should be spent on better education, better infrastructure etc...

I propose that all the residents of an area where a name change is proposed stop paying municipal tax, lets see who gives in first. :)

Agreed! I'm also sure most people don't really care that the name gets changed, or even what it get's changed to, but ai! change, just for changes sake, is just plain stoopid imo. Many people will probly still just call the place what they like.
We keep hearing there's no munny for services, and improvements to the communities, etc.
But I guess namechanges are here to stay... so the sheep can keep getting the name boards changed to their liking, ... me wondering if they can think far enough ahead to realise that now they're gonna have to stay in the shack for another 5 years, coz the munny for houses has gone into the name change :D
I reely don't understand that weird sense of priorities... do you want a house and decent services, or the name changed.... hmmm let's change the name

This is a classic example of a bigot. Practice what you preach. Seems like people like you have not gotten used to the old original names of places in the first place. Places that were not there before. How dare you preach if you cannot even sustain what you advocate in the first place.
