Tsunami warning for Pacific
26/12/2006 16:57 - (SA)

Taipei - A huge earthquake struck off Taiwan on Tuesday, sparking a tsunami warning, said the Pacific Tsunami warning centre.

The undersea earthquake measuring magnitude 7.1 struck at 12:26 with its epicentre 23km southwest of Hengchun in the southernmost tip of Taiwan, the United States geological survey said. It originated 22km under the sea.

What are the chances of this happening exactly 2 years since the last major Tsunami hit?

The official report indicates the following:
Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said:
NO DESTRUCTIVE PACIFIC-WIDE TSUNAMI THREAT EXISTS BASED ON
HISTORICAL EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI DATA.

HOWEVER - EARTHQUAKES OF THIS SIZE SOMETIMES GENERATE LOCAL
TSUNAMIS THAT CAN BE DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTS LOCATED WITHIN
A HUNDRED KILOMETERS OF THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER. AUTHORITIES
IN THE REGION OF THE EPICENTER SHOULD BE AWARE OF THIS
POSSIBILITY AND TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION.

Yeah because it's not nearly as severe as the one that hit in 2004. But still people should be weary..

As tired as they should be, they ought to be wary too.

Earthquake Clouds predict when & where the earthquake will occur

http://quake.exit.com (over 270 pages)
This retired Chinese chemist Zhonghao Shou has predicted the following:
* Approx time from 30 - 112 days when the earthquake will occur.
* Approx magnitude on the Richter scale
* Approx Epicenter indicated by the tail of the earthquake cloud

Read the Bam prediction about the Iran earthquake, he uses
the public weather satellite images from Eumetsat and others, but
they have limited resolution to what the United States Geological Survey use.

Strange day for major earthquakes: (seems like Dec is earthquake month)
* 26 Dec 2003 Bam, Iran earthquake killed 26 200
Earthquake cloud prediction image over Bam, Iran
Animation of the Bam earthquake cloud
* 26 Dec 2004 Tsunami in Northern Sumatra (283000 killed)
* 26 Dec 2006 Taiwan earthquake 1 & 2

Don't worry we should be fine with all those govt shareholdings. :D
Yeah we've got tsunami immunity built right into our phone bills; aren't we lucky the gub cares so much for the people.

Last time I checked, those coordinates were not in the Pacific, but in the Indian Ocean region.
More to the point, Any indication that we can expect the shock wave to cause a wave that will reach our shores?

Magnitude 6.9 is not huge (since the scale is logarithmic), and there is approximately one of those every month. Only when they are very close to the surface is there a significant tsunami risk. See: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-49209310
A powerful quake off the Indonesian island of Java has rattled the capital Jakarta but there appear to have been no major casualties or damage.

A tsunami warning after the quake, recorded by US monitors as being magnitude 6.9, was later cancelled.
