Turn your 6950 into a 6970

AMD don't produce cards for the market, just the silicon and the reference design, which are then manufactured and marketed by the likes of Club 3D, MSI, et al.

Hmmm... Someone was telling me they can get the cards directly from AMD, before it gets to any 3rd party vendor. They offered a 6870 but I want the 6950 for the reason of the creation of this thread. :)
 
I am sure AMD assembles an initial batch for their own testing and qualification processes (or more likely has one of the card manufacturers assemble for them) but AFAIK they don't sell these as they are effectively engineering samples. Once the GPU's are fully qualified they release these and the reference design to the card manufacturers.
 
nice find, yeah will grab mine this week if all goes well.

could also present an opportunity for AMD to patch the Radeon HD 6950.

So yeah not 100% confirmed they will lock it though :P

Either way, the future drivers may not work on the unlocked HD6950's as AMD may disable the feature through the drivers.
