Hi All

I'm not sure whether this is the correct category for this, but :

Does a Optical to 3.5mm cable or converter exist ?

I have a Hisense TV (about 5 years old) with only a 3.5mm headphone jack and an optical audio out. I've tested the 3.5mm with headphones and it works. Never tested the optical.

Now I bought one of the Microlab speaker sets ( https://www.takealot.com/microlab-m108-2-1ch-subwoofer-speaker/PLID47826100 ) which only has a 3.5mm audio in. So I connected it to the headphone jack with the supplied 3.5 to 3.5 cable, but it doesn't work ?! Turning the speaker set volume to full blast , I can just hear something, but I must put my ear to the speaker.

So it seems the only option is to convert the optical out to 3.5mm. I have no idea if this will work...

Any advice will be much appreciated !

Return the speakers, they are clearly broken as the common denominator that doesn’t work.

An optical to 3.5mm converter likely does exists but costs much more than those speakers because it episode need a digital to analog conversion.

Also trying to solve one problem with another, just return the product and buy something else.

Being a PC speaker setup it’s likely expecting some level of pre-amp the Tv doesn’t do. Or it’s just rubbish.

wow, this reminds me of the late 90s
yes it does exist
we had them on our mini disc players to SpDFF or whatever its called

Yes I second the speakers or connector either being faulty or not setup correctly if this can be done. Any speaker amp should be able to take a headphone connection as other connectors don't have stronger signals so you won't get anywhere with a converter. You do get converters but they're quite expensive and you need an active one which aren't easy to find. They also don't always work as audio and video can become choppy or flickering.

S/PDIF = Optical.

It can however also be transported over coaxial but it’s a mono cable signal and still digital.

Your minidisc likely did this internally and not in line within the cable itself.

First test the speak on your phone (hopefully you don't have an iphone).
If it work, them buy a 3.5mm Audio Jack To 2x RCA, the audio jack goes into the subwoofer and the rc cables go the the back of the tv Left audio output and right audio output. Now you don't need to use the headphone jack on TV.

Edit: This only works if the Tv had RCA audio output.

Thanks, everyone !

Dan C : Yes, plugged in and switched on ! Although there was load shedding at the time, but surely these speakers should be able to handle that ?

DanDango, I just got excited, maybe I missed something, but went to double check and unfortunately , I only have 3.5mm headphone out and Optical out. RCA is only AV in and Component In ! Then there are 4 x HDMI, one of which is labelled HDMI (Arc). I am only using one HDMI, but I assume all 4 of them will be IN ?

SauRonZA, I tested the speakers on the PC and it works. I again tested the headphones on the TV and realised that the sound level is also not up to scratch, if I compare what the same headphones sound like through the phone. I think the problem lies with the TV headphone jack....

It seems my options are : Replace TV or get some more expensive soundbar with optical input.

Try seeing if there's separate volume or equaliser settings for the headphone. I still think though if the headphone has decent sound then the speakers should have as well.

You could try an Digital Audio To Analog Audio Converter.

https://www.takealot.com/mt-viki-digital-audio-to-analog-audio-converter/PLID54517886

Connect TV Optical out to the Digital Audio To Analog Audio Converter using Toslink Optical cable.

And then using the 3.5mm Audio Jack To 2x RCA, like DanDango said, connect from converter to your speakers.

My hisense TV's headphone jack is also kak. Gave up on it and plugged the microlab set into my Lit Box. Works fine now, and luckily all my needs are on the lit box. Won't work if you want the same speakers for other sources, obviously.

Ahh !! I can't believe I missed that !! My MiBox has the 3.5mm jack, but I never thought about checking ! Now the speakers are already returned. I was on the point of getting this Hisense soundbar . The cheapest I can find with Optical :

..but after reading smc's post about the control of the volume, I think I'm just going to re-order those speakers again !!
