TV does kinda suck now...

I would be quite happy to forego all the subscriptions if there was an option to simply BUY the shows outright and I'm willing to bet it would cost me less too.
Sure, like the good old DVD days... not a chance they'll let you escape unsubscribe that way

There's probably some analytics somewhere that have shows historically they watch more TV through winter and so they target it accordingly, otherwise they have very good shows going down as flops for a lack of viewership.

Makes sense

Yup even though I pay for a bunch of things I still end up getting a lot of things on the high seas that simply aren't available otherwise or don't justify a full subscription.

Disney+ was so bad at logging itself out all the time and then requiring my phone to login again that my kids never used it and I ended up dropping it. Pure and simple failure to deliver at their prime directive.

If Apple TV supported TV Shows locally I would probably have done exactly that as most everything is on there.
Dvds and blurays, if people went back to physical we might actually see some decent movies and series again.

Have been buying old series on dvd or blurays where possible

Have to admit I'm still using audio DVD's in my car, why upgrade if that works well enough.

Besides the inconvenience of changing disks every 4 episodes it's not to bad.

Probably the best way to store classics at home, but not sure what we're going to do when players can no longer be repaired / replaced.

It used to be that studios would film a season of TV (usually around 22 episodes) and while that season was airing, they would start filming the next season. These days, instead of being proactive during the airing of a show, studios wait until the reviews are in. Why risk writing and filming something only to find out audiences didn’t resonate with that story line? Or finding out that audiences didn’t like a certain character? Or what if the audience doesn’t like the tone? If they wait until the reviews are in, then all of these complaints can be addressed in the writer’s room ahead of the next season. And if all of the complaints are addressed, that will lead to more viewership and more money…right?

While studio executives remain convinced that they can make the perfect show that will appeal to everyone, they are losing viewership to older classics. Nielsen reported that, in 2024, The Big Bang Theory, NCIS, and Criminal Minds were all in the overall top ten most streamed shows across platforms. Audiences are much more willing to sit down with an older show than invest time into a show that won’t update until they’ve forgotten every plot detail. I have a hard time remembering some of the shows I watch, and I’m highly invested in the world of film and TV. The average viewer is more like my mom, who has a hard time remembering what happened in the last episode let alone something she watched three years ago.

Watched a review recently from the critical drinker where he finally watched Firefly and reviewed it. One of the interesting things he said in that review was how we did not realize how good we had it in the 90's and early 2000's. TV was in a golden age I feel and we just assumed it would stay that good or get better and instead the opposite happened. We really did not know how good we had it back then. Modern stuff is just so non-appealing for the most part with a very few exceptions. Finding nice shows to watch as a family we have to dig pretty deep, or go back in time to older stuff. Sad really.
Not too say too much about new tv shows nowadays, but let's just say you won't see this again

I only own a hand full of physical things still, probably all from 10+ years ago.

I threw a lot of CD's and some dvds in the trash. I wonder if the minidisk caught on if that would have been less unweildy to store.
