So I got home earlier and my LG TV doesn't want to power on at all. I suspect lightning damage as there was a storm in the area earlier.

What are my options, TV is only 3 months old, still under standard warranty, but don't have insurance on it. It was connected to a surge protector plug, everything else is working fine. Just the TV seems messed up.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thnx!

Warranty won't cover lightning damage. Some surge protectors have supposed substantial cover, but there would've been a slip you'd need to have sent in & it likely also wouldn't apply to lightning.

Take it to where you bought it. Tell them it no longer works. Don't dare mention 'lightning'. Cross fingers & hope for the best. If they diagnose the damage as having been caused by lightning you're, as they say, **** out of luck.

Also, get insurance.

Warranty claim. Lg are pretty good with that.

Household insurance may cover surges though. Mine does. So if warranty claim fails try that.

Going to contact LG tomorrow, hopefully something works out. Don't have any kind of insurance so that won't help.

Saw a couple of ads on OLX for guys who repair lightning struck TVs, maybe a viable option if I don't come right with LG?

Learn from the experience. If a protector was adjacent to a TV and not within feet of earth ground, then it does not claim to protect from typically destructive surges. And sometimes can make appliance damage easier.

The protector probably advertises a big buck warranty that would replace the TV. Read its warranty fine print.

Fixing damaged may be easy. More difficult is getting replacement parts. Typically a direct lightning strike far down the street is incoming to all appliances. But damage means both an incoming and outgoing path. Outgoing and damaged may be the cable connection. Board connected to that outgoing path (coax cable) may need be replaced. Easier is to have it replaced under warranty or let a shop identify and order that part.

You guys think I should contact makro (where i bought the TV) or LG directly for the warranty query?

There's no way I can take it to them, they will have to collect..

LG directly. They will come to your place...

Good stuff hope they open during this holiday season!

Ok called LG, they said they would send a technician through by Thursday. Let's see what happens...

Keep the info simple

It worked
You went out
You came back
It did not work.

Let them test for the problem. Just now it was not lightening but something else....

Good advise. Just say it stopped working. If it really was lightning damage I'm sure other appliances in your house would have died as well.

Especially his ADSL modem/router.

Unless of course the tv was connected to an external aerial... ;)

Would that then not imply a direct strike? When lightning struck really close to my house pretty much everything fried, and the mains tripped. Can't imagine what a direct strike would do.

Not necessarily. I imagine a nearby strike could induce a hectic voltage in the aerial? But just speculating here. I reckon LG will say "when can we deliver your new TV"

In that case the connector for that won't provide a signal if the unit gets power.

Best to get it tested by someone who has the required replacement bits and pieces.
Offering more info would get them to make an unconfirmed diagnoses and then they will probably be reluctant to diagnose properly...

Oh one very daft question. Does the TV have a fuse, and have you checked it?
Also, tried a different plug socket?

Not the most electrically clued up guy in the world, so not even sure where to check for a fuse... I just rang up LG and yelled help :P

And yes we do have an outside aerial, but like I said everything else works fine

Act dum, phone Makro and say your tv died. You don't know why.
Just have that slip ready.
If they tell you it was lightning, ask what it is, because all your other tv and and and still works.
Act dum and tell them you want to see 7de laan tonight, very tense at the moment.
