I was just wondering, is it possible to buy a new TV somewhere in the Cape Town area without having to have a valid TV licence? If so, please tell me where?

Funny enough, i owned a tv for a whole 3 weeks, i took out a tv licence to purchase it, and some idiots broke into my flat and stole the damn thing.. I reported it to the police and informed the SABC of the theft of the unit, and that i will not be needing the license anymore since i will not be replacing my tv anytime soon.. btw, this is about 10 years ago..
The other day, I received a letter from SABC stating that i owe them R6000+ for outstanding license fees..
So, my oppinion.. DO NOT GET THE LICENSE.. ITS A TRAP!!!
even if you pay it on time, they will still charge you more than what you need to pay... they first need to fire all their accountants(useless bunch) and hire new ones..

Don't do it.

Once they have you on record, you have to prove to them that you don't have a tv if you want to cancel it. Someone else on the forums posted the correct procedure for this and it apparently involves getting someone out to inspect your premises at your expense. The cost of this being more than the tv license itself and if memory serves, this has to be done on a yearly basis or something crazy.

Can't you just get a family member / friend that already has a licence to purchuse it for you? That's my first ave of thinking.

If you have a PC get a TV tuner card...no hassels and no questions asked..

Pay your TV license it's the right thing to do.

no its not, we are like the only country where you have to have a license to watch tv?? wtf, its the stupidiest thing in the fkn world and the goverment people just need more holidays and Mercedes
on topic, just get someone to buy it for you

If you are going to buy a TV from a major retailer then 100% you need one.

In the United Kingdom and its Crown dependencies, any household watching or recording television transmissions must purchase a television licence, every year.

The television licence fee (Swedish: TV-avgift) in Sweden funds the country's three public-service broadcasting organizations – Sveriges Television, Sveriges Radio, and Sveriges Utbildningsradio – enabling them to provide national and local radio and television services designed to educate, inform and entertain, free of commercial advertising. Part of the licence fee revenue is also used to fund Radiotjänst i Kiruna, the private corporation tasked with collecting the fee. The level of the fee is set by the Riksdag and currently (March 2009) stands at 2,076 SEK[2] (about €194 / US$263) per annum.

Need I go on?

EDIT: Oops I see Bwana beat me to it...

Go to shop, buy expensive TV, tell them you don't want the license, they'll tell you that you need to have it, then you say that you won't be buying the expensive TV then. Suddenly, you won't need a license.

I refuse to pay a TV license because of the ***** that is SABC. If they actually had proper management doing their jobs, maybe, but definitely not now.

I agree with what others have said.

I wouldn't mind paying for a tv license, but the nightmare that is the department that handles licenses just puts me off. There have been plenty of stories of people not having a tv anymore and trying to cancel their licenses and then start getting lawyers letters for not paying.

Call that an excuse if you want, but the point remains. Once you have a license and they have you on record, you get treated as if you will always owe them the money, with or without a tv.

So just get someone with a license to go buy it for you.

I also say pay the licence - thats how it works BUT I have seen over enthusiastic sales people with an extra say R100 on the side use a copy of another clients tv licence, but pay it dude, its the right thing to do, you will sleep better at night.

No you won't sleep better, except if you like supporting the ANC propaganda machine. Just borrow a licence from some douche who has one.

and at the same time lets stop arresting criminals and putting them in jail because certain government/police officials are corrupt...sheesh man

it starts with something small like not paying your tv license, then you start stealing electricity and water, then what next?
