TV Without TV Licence...

I was just wondering, is it possible to buy a new TV somewhere in the Cape Town area without having to have a valid TV licence? If so, please tell me where?

You need a licence - no way around it even if you try 2nd hand stores (actually they are nailing those stores in Cape Town).

You also need a valid licence - so it not only needs to be paid up but you need the latest licence card.

Its a bit of a bummer as I was going to buy my wife a 32" Sony for her birthday (today) but the licence is in her name (madian) and we do not have the new card yet. Could not buy her the TV as it was suppose to be a suprise.

I received a card once YEARS ago....never again. Just show the licence statement/account you receive once a year.

pvr or media plyer + uncapped internet + monitor without tuner. No license required for that. Who needs sabc?

I`m all for licenses for people who actually watch SABC or listen to an SABC station on the radio, but I haven`t watched or listened 1 minute of SABC in the last 2 years.

That you can only do at places that can verify your licence status. The law states that it not only has to be paid up, but you need to show proof (your card).

Anyway, it sucks as I could have been watching TV on our new 32" now if they where not so anal (the store). Sadly my wife is one of those people that if I suprised her with the TV she would be over the moon but if she new about the purchase, then she would stop it (the irony and joys of woman).

And then one day she`s upset when you surprise her with something expensive.. whats a man supposed to do?

I buy at Tafelberg so no problems there.

My wife would beat me over the head if I bought her a TV. She would say that is just for me and she would be right. lol

My plan for when I want to get my first TV:
"uhm.. hey dad, can you go buy that 42" 3D LED at this shop, heres the 20k"

1) Browse on web for decent tutorial on how to disconnect TV tuner
2) Grab a screwdriver and soldering Iron/Hammer and remove tuner
3) Have a awesome TV without the Tuner
4) Dont get the SABC knocking on my door saying "Uhm, you got a TV but aint paying for the license..PAY up biatch!"
5) Pray I didnt break some stupid seal when TV breaks and have to take in for warranty..

I find the problem is that generally screens without tuners are more expensive due the fact they sell less of them... so you will save money in buying a TV and hacking it.

All that hassle to save R23 @ month. :wtf:

R23 a month is alot if you don't earn much.

All these little costs add up rather quickly.

Yea but if you can pay for a 20k 3D LED tv , then you sure as hell can pay R250 a year for a tv license.

Anyway, the BBC would not be what it is today if they did not have tv licenses in the UK. Only problem with the SABC is , it's in total chaos and managed by monkeys. If they actually delivered like the BBC would, no one would think twice about this R250 a year.

Why don't you just buy a monitor?

you know , all i had to do is pick up a nice tv from my gf's uncle because he didnt want it in his holiday flat in margate anymore , got home safely in dbn again , my uncle then ran a cord down to our granny flat and boom we have dstv for which we dont pay for + no tv licence because i choose not to watch the crap on sabc because we dont watch tv that often so why should i pay for the toilet nonsense ?

dude you could also ask your family members who do have a tv licence to actually purchase the tv for you and then you just give them the cash as im sure you are allowed two tv's per licence holder... thats what my dad told me but i dont know if hes correct :P

So I suppose you don't listen to any radio at all has well?

What pissed me off even more than the TV Licence extortion racket that the SABC runs, was the duties that SARS asks for!

I only found out recently, but SARS wants 25% customs duty, 7% ad valorum duty and 15.4% VAT on any monitor that isn't a computer monitor!

Depending on how you calculate that (whether taxes are taxed or not) a $ 1 000 (R 7 000) TV will end up costing you between R 10 318 and R 10 804, but a $ 1 000 projector will only cost R 8 078 'cause projectors only attract VAT. And on top of all that, you don't pay for speakers you aren't going to use (home theatre system), and you don't pay a TV licence. Forget plasma, I'm going to import me a full HD projector (or find a way to get a 55" plasma classed as a 'computer monitor').

and at the same time lets stop arresting criminals and putting them in jail because certain government/police officials are corrupt...sheesh man

it starts with something small like not paying your tv license, then you start stealing electricity and water, then what next?

Yes, because your TV license goes to policing? Some things just aren't comparable.
