These packages which include the Data Card instead of a phone mean (ie Business 100s) mean that as you only get one sim, you either have to swap the sim card over between your phone and data card or get dual sim – both of which means you have to switch off one device.

Is there any way around this ?

I'm currently using a prepaid sim and a contract sim. Vshop actually told me i can't get a twin sim on my weekender+datacard, so i'm somewhat forced to have 2 different sims [i couldn't even transfer my prepaid number [which i had for 4 years now] ]. So they're certainly not making it easy to migrate , so i'll be sticking to my prepaid for a while still. Atm i receive all calls on my prepaid, and still use it to make calls [unless it's off-peak then i use the weekender sim with free minutes]. Sure i'm hit with a rate difference on prepaid for outgoing calls, but at this stage convenience overrides the costs.

My weekender sim is thus purely data and SMS. I don't give the number to people to call, even though i might use it to make certain types of calls.

I wanted to get it all on the one number, but the problems mentioned above, didn't make it worthwhile. [although the shop attendant did mention "we are working on it"].

Currently, not.

Twin SIM at least helps in not swapping the SIM around, but last device activated will be the one in use.

Getting a (second) low cost contract (Messenger, for example @ R35/month) and using it purely for the data card is still a good option. This way you keep your voice device free and can use your data card without interruptions.

v3g correct me if i'm wrong....you can attach data bundles (both 3G and GPRS) to any contract except prepaid SIM's?

Can I get a dual SIM om prepaid?

Maybe it is my fault for not looking into this, but it strikes as a bugger up.

Can you ask when the situation may change :) Thanks

diabolus,
I got twincall activated on my Weekender when I bought the datacard and even specified it as the reason why I wanted Twincall.

Was your prepaid sim not a "Vodac" SIM as a friend of mine didn't want to pay R105 for a contract simm when she signed a contract, so she bought a prepaid sim and they converted the prepaid sim.

For me its not an issue to switch off on of the devices, but I'm worried about the wear and tear that is caused by switching sims all the time (plus obviously, the inconvenience thereof). (I'm using my 3G enabled sim in the 3G Data card and in my iMate, which is only used as a means to access the internet and e-mail) The representative from VSP however tells me that one cannot get a dual sim on the 3G enabled sim (the old story of no dual sim on data enabled sims). Can you perhaps point me in the right directions V3G, since having a dual sim on the data line would really simplify my life a lot!

The Vodashops are cautious that end users will not understand the whole concept of twin sims where the last sim to be powered up becomes the master.

Explain to them you understand how it works and that you will not have both on at the same time.

If you don't come right, call 082 155 and ask them to assist. Drop me a PM if you still battle.

@vodacom3g - I am an autopage vodacom subscriber. Do I have to go to an Autopage outlet for a twin sim or can a vodashop hook me up?
