Hi all.
Trying to help a friend of a friend, the situation.
His previous work place gave him a work iPhone and also set up a iTunes account for him using his work email address, let's call this the @abc address. While working for the place over 4 years he baught a lot of music, apps etc on that iTunes account.

When he left the company after 4 years he gave back his phone, but baught himself a iPhone from the iStore and they helped him to set up a new iTunes account with his gmail email address. It might also be possible that they changed his original iTunes account email/name from the workplace to his gmail email, he can't remember.

Currently on his phone, he is signed in to the app store with his @gmail iTunes account, but the @abc iTunes account still seams to be signed in to iCloud.

When going to Settings, iCloud, the @abc address is still signed in. In iCloud, photos, contacts etc is switched on, but backup is switched off. When wanting to switch on backup it asks for the @abc accounts password, but he can't remember the password. When wanting to sign out of the @abc account in iCloud, it warns that his photos, etc stored on that account will be deleted from the phone, so I don't want to just sign out and lose his stuff.

When going to apple.com or icloud.com to try recover the password, I enter the @abc address but then I get a message that @abc is not a Apple ID, so I don't know, maybe the Apple store converted it to his @gmail after all?

So what I want to do is make sure I backup all things currently on his phone to my Mac, will a normal backup in iTunes do everything, photos, music etc?

Then I want to sign out of that @abc account in iCloud and hope nothing gets deleted off his phone. If stuff gets deleted, I hope I can recover it from the backup which I made on my Mac.

Then I'll sign in to iCloud using his @gmail account and switch on photos, backup etc.

As for the music I don't know, he still has all music purchased since way back on his laptop's iTunes at home, but as for which account it belongs to or whether he'll be able to use it all on the @gmail account I don't know.

Would they be able to confirm whether the @abc Apple ID still exists or whether it was converted to the @gmail one?
Whatever you do don't sign out of anything before you know exactly what the situation is and the way forward, you could have a bricked iPhone if it's linked to the icloud of the account you can't remember the password to...
