Tyre Circumference

Dear All
So i have a rare and expensive tyre size 165/60/14 and want to change to 175/65/14.
This means an increase in the circumference or overall diameter.
The higher profile tyre and width should improve handling and ride comfort.
Any advice, can i actually do this.

BTW: this is for i10, current hankooks are expensive.
Also, the current tyre is brand new, wife punctured tyre while driving over a pothole, so i am using the spare, and the new tyre will then become the spare.

excuse my ignorance but shouldn't you always try keep your overall diameter the same?

Also i don't mean to be an arse but people seriously shouldn't skimp on buying decent tyres for their and others own safety.
 
Theres no problem doing it as long as your rim (J) width can handle the wider tyre. It is optimal to try to keep the ratio between width and wall height as close as possible.

Also remember your speedo and your odo will under read.

MickZA and naasier - thats is my point, R750 for such a small tyre (165/60) cos its rare.
The 175/65 costs R400-500 for good name brands.

D3x! & etwylite, you are correct, but i am not debating tyre types, rather the profiles.
But that is exactly my point, the tyre circumference/overall diameter is/maybe changing, which might/will have an effect on odo/speed/warranty/insurance.
 
I went with Supa quik, Kumho tyres 165/60 at R650.
Tiger wheel and tyre quoted me R800 for hankooks and 1k for Kumho.
Other shops only had chinese import, linglong, at R500.

Sometimes sh*t happens at the absolute worst timing and it's not a choice of want to skimp, but rather have to :/

18 months back when I was checking pricing for my tyres, a set of Pirelli cost R22,000.00 (tyres only) and Michelin were R20,000.00 (tyres only) a set. I've had a rough time the last 3 months and if I got hit with those tyre bills now, I think I'd have to skimp.

PS By skimp, I mean like cheaper, decent brand (ie Hankook) and not horrible knock offs or retreads
 
different diameter will affect the ABS cos the wheels will be moving at different rates...if there are different tyre sizes on at the same time.

Yoh, dont tell me its run flats.
Hankook are decent tyres (i think?), on the Getz it lasted me 60 000 kms

My guess, thicker tyres (175 vs. 165) improves handling.
Thicker profile (65 vs. 60) improves comfort but reverse effect on handling (car is higher now).

The website does not have 165/60 as standard - but it does show that the difference is substantial.

They're correct below regarding the profile ... lower = better handling and higher = more comfort

remember the proofile is a ratio of the width
so a 65 profile on 185 wide tyre will not be the same as 65 on a 215 tyre for example

so you can keep the overall circumference of the tyre the same by using a wider tyre with a "lower" profile. Just make sure it will fit on the rim, and clear the components of your car, shocks, fenders etc
usually going up to the next width and dropping the profile to next lower one it should be okay.
Just check the calculators posted earlier - also check if that size is available to buy

Many people have the wrong perception of tyre height, I once did too till I found this out
