Uber loses sexual assault case in US

Uber Technologies was hit with $8.5 million (R138.15 million) in damages in a trial over a 19-year-old woman’s claim that she was raped by her driver in Arizona, raising the rideshare giant’s risk of a costly settlement to resolve thousands of similar cases.

The verdict reached by a nine-person jury in Phoenix on Thursday is the first time Uber has been found liable for not preventing an alleged sexual assault of a passenger.

According to information here, Uber receives sexual assault/misconduct reports approximately every 8 minutes based on sealed court records - far higher than their public disclosures suggested.

I'm fundamentally uncomfortable with the notion of shifting blame and liability from the person who actually commits the crime to whatever company that they happen to contract to. And let's be honest - the quantum of any settlement from a large corporation is going to be far bigger than what you can get by holding an individual accountable - I'm sure that must account for at least some part of the motivation behind this litigation.
