Uber users in SA beware

Two Uber customers who were intimidated by metered taxi drivers outside the Sandton Gautrain station on Monday had a warning for fellow fans of the app-based service.

That's what happens when you try bring a 1st world service to the 3rd world.

Pepper spray.
What worries is me is tomorrow a passenger or bystander takes on one of these metered-taxi drivers, injuring him badly, and then the issue will turn political.

I called an Uber to get picked up outside Sandton Gautrain station - the driver said he won't pick me up outside, but instead at the drop off parking lot because of the taxis :(

Why am I not surprised at the security in our country. Not in our jurisdiction so just turn a blind eye.

I'm done. I'll never use a non-uber taxi. I'll walk before I ever contribute to these thugs livelihoods.

Uber are having similar issues with other taxis in many other countries, so it isn't a problem unique to South Africa. I think it's just the result of someone disrupting a market which has had it too easy for too long.

Just wait, next week Cosatu will have their supporters up in arms and then they burn the Uber taxis.

Bunch of ****ing savages. These metered taxis enjoyed capitalism while they were charging us R15/km. They clearly don't like the aspect of capitalism that allows others to enter the market and offer it cheaper.

So glad this crap doesn't happen in Durban.

It does. The uber guys get chased away from the uShaka drop off location (that corner where the Spur is). Also, you can't get an Uber in front of Origin or near Umhlanga village as they get chased away.

I do a lot of Uber trips, and the Uber drivers are quite vocal about the crap they have to put up with from these thugs.

It is probably only a matter of time until private individuals who get fetched or dropped off are intimidated the same way.

What these idiots fail to realize is that 99% of the people who use uber have never and will never use a metro taxi. I have never, ever used a metro taxi, I have either asked a friend or family to fetch me after a piss up or just had the wife drive me. The fact that I can now use Uber is great. Take uber away and I will just simply go back to asking friends or family. The metro taxi's have lost nothing.
