Uber users in SA beware

These metered taxis enjoyed capitalism while they were charging us R15/km. They clearly don't like the aspect of capitalism that allows others to enter the market and offer it cheaper.

Metered taxis were never a good example of capitalism since their rates are government regulated and their licences government approved. In fact, this is exactly why they are now so indignant. In the past, going through the bureaucratic motions and filing the paperwork, etc, was a licence to provide your mediocre taxi service in your filthy old cab with a guaranteed income if you hung around a taxi rank all day, queuing for your turn at the trough. Suddenly, it's not so easy and they have to compete in a free market. Must come as a bit of a shock.

Off topic question: Are there still drivers available lets say at 11PM? I want to try Uber tonight but it will suck to sit at the bar with no ride home. This is PTA east BTW.

No-one likes capitalism when it starts eating into their market and income. They only pay lip service to loving competition.

Well don't tell the Dutch or Belgians that you think they're French.

The other places Uber is having these problems are also third world, or French.
Sure.

If the cars aren't marked then how are the metered taxis identifying them?

They still need the public transport operator disk or something like that in the windscreen - all the Uber's I've been in in JHB have one, not sure exactly what it is (maybe the charter license?). Besides it's usually fairly obvious - recent model Audi/BMW/Merc (with dashboard iphone mount) picking somebody up waving their phone at them.

We all saw the close shave the Uber driver had on Ray Donovan the other night. Just the word Uber is making me nervous...

I use DudeBru here in CT. No hassles.
