Ubiquiti Long Range AP

Injector and normal switch, or Poe switch is fine

They can be linked to any normal network. You will need to download and setup the device through the Ubiquiti UniFi Controller software though, AFAIK you cannot just log into it and configure it as a standalone device

Hi All.

I am looking at getting one of these..

https://scoop.co.za/ubiquiti-unifi-duoal-band-ac-long-range-ap.html

Does this need a Ubiquiti switch or can it be connect via an injector to a normal switch?

Thank

Got one from Uniterm for less than that quoted price, and yes, it works fine with a regular switch. Interestingly, they are now proper PoE compliant devices, not just passive PoE, so they can also run from any active PoE switch, or using the supplied injector.

Hi All

Quick question. I think I am missing something.

What is this ADOPTION all about?

Regards

Adoption is the process of bringing a newly installed AP under the control of a controller, as far as I know.

Then you can set up the configuration in the controller, and have the AP's all receive the updated configuration.

Thanks. I am trying to set it up to be stand alone but it wont come online as its waiting for adoption.

Is there a way to disable it or maybe change the function to a stand alone.?

AFAIK, they don't work standalone. They must have a controller, even if it will be the only AP in the system.

I am running the controller for my home network in a docker container, for what that is worth.

From what I understand you can run the Controller on a Windows PC as well. Am I wrong here?

They can run standalone once they have been setup and dont need to talk to the controlled again after that.
I setup one for my inlaws a few years back and the pc that was the controller died ages ago, the AP still works fine though.

Correct you only need the controller to set it up. Once setup you can stop the controller.
The other great thing about them is you do one setup in the controller and as you add more AP it just duplicates the settings to them all.
I added a second one to our office setup yesterday in 5min. With all the guest login pages and other things.

Managed to get it up and running now with no controller software

Just plug it into a DHCP network. Load the Android Unfi App onto your phone. Connect and configure. Took about 5 minutes.

Really? On my phone the app will only run when you point it to the pc running the controller. How did you manage to get that to work without it?

All I did was plug it into the network(has to be a dhcp network) waited for the green light. Connected to the default ssid.

The ran the app, it found the device and connected.

Then came up with the screen where you setup the ssid and security. I added all of that...saved.

After that it was online and I could connect.
