Ok need to access one of these critters, got the unify app on my phone but it picks up no controllers and if i manually punch in the ip with default port the default admin & password credentials are not accepted. can anyone point me to a guide for the device and password recovery procedure please. on a phone at the moment...

Reset the device to defaults to make sure no other settings are on there via that small pinhole at the back
Then check if you pick up anything via the Wifi AP. If not load the Controller software on a PC and plug the AP into the network

These AP's don't have a web interface where you can connect to, one can SSH to them, but tha's about it. Everything is controlled by the controller software, but read you could also set it up via the App on your phone... maybe this model is to old for that method, or maybe you need a controller first with the App on the phone..

If it's part of an existing group of APs you can try use the recovery SSH method to log in,if the credentials were changed from default you have to use the reset procedure depending on the AP version (the back of it has version details) and re-adopt it to a controller
Only a single controller can adopt a unit
