According to PC Gamer, tests of upcoming Ubisoft PC titles Assassin's Creed 2 and Settlers VII proved how flawed the system actually is. If, for whatever reason, your connection experiences an issue (be it router reboot or a momentary pause in connectivity) the software will immediately boot you to the main menu of the game. Oh, and all that progress you made after a previous save or checkpoint? That's gone.

But that isn't the worst part. If Ubisoft's "Master Servers" encounter any errors, then all players with working connections logged in to the servers will not be able to play their games until the servers are back online, and lose all unsaved progress if this scenario occurs during gameplay.

Seems like they didn't learn from EA's mistake with Spore, or with Activision and MW2 (to an extent). And neither had a system this stupid. No prizes for guessing the most pirated game of 2010

I duno. I download alot of games, but those I actually play, I buy. Not because of some moral reason, but because I want those developers to keep doing what they're doing. I want to support them.
Gone are the days where I buy a game and play it for 10 minuets before I realize that despite the hype, its crap and I just wasted R300 odd bucks.

Having recently bought Modern Warfare 2 for PC I must admit, I quite like the Steam setup. Allows me to game without having the discs constantly going in the drive.

its all nice and well when its working but I dont wanna game with the constant fear of my line dropping or something lol :D

I saw this today as well, it's so stupid... but all companies need to learn from their mistakes and take millions of hits.

It will be interesting if Modern Warfare 2 sales have actually suffered because of the copyright restrictions.

I for one, have bought both the PS3 version and now the PC version.

that is nice to have, but MW2 requires internet to lan, which is a big fail, Ubisoft had it perfect with Anno 1404, one online registration and no disc needed, now they come with this ****

Yeah, they probably saw the sales of MW/MW2 and thought WTF were we thinking :D

I'm Blizzard are crying themselves to sleep over WoW too.

Yea, but unlike this Ubisoft crap, Steam actually allows you to play games OFFLINE [without any internet connection] . Yes MW2 is multiplayer so that's another story, but if you bought a single player game [like Assassin's Creed 2] you are not required to be -online for the duration of the gameplay- . You might need to be online to log into Steam initially or to authenticate the game , but geez i've never had my connection drop in -single player game- and then getting booted out of the game......

...i might as well play World of Warcraft then..it's cheaper and got more features.

Yeah, telkom decided to mess with my line one day at least I could put steam in offline mode. This is just pure stupid by ubisoft.

I don't mind it. If I can play the game, I dont mind being online to play. Whats all the moaning about? Hows it really going to affect you negatively? Oh you thought you could share this game with a few friends? :P This is the result of piracy. Be happy its coming out on PC at all.

It's a case of our crap internet in this country. The issue is, you're in the middle of an action packed sequence [and can't save] and your line goes down.....i'd like to see you repeat that statement then.

Now, imagine you need to a 24-7 connection to -start- your Xbox/PS3 , no matter what you are playing...want to play some Guitar Hero at your buddies...sorry..no internet connection there......want to LAN or go play some coop game ..oops connection is not staying online and your game crash everytime the line dips...

"not affect you negatively" ? geez, not everyone has 4 MB/s lines that are online 24-7 .

Alot of people are using their cellphone/3G connection to do this, not exactly ideal if you need it to remain online for the -entire duration of your gameplay- , one dip and the game shuts down.

Our Telkom (line going down) Eskom (power going out) and all the other issues are not Ubisoft or any company from USA or Europes problems. They cater to where the money is made. Much like Blizzard not giving us a local server, which was a joke even asking for. I'll buy this game, play it and see how many issues I have.

New Ubisoft DRM requires internet ALL the time
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, February 19, 2010 - 2:37 PM

Wow -- does the gaming industry seriously not realize that they are killing off their own sales by implementing weird requirements ? We've had the DRM discussions, the copy protection discussions, the root kit discussions and now UBISOFT ups it another notch by making a requirement that is just ridiculous.

My former colleagues at PC Gamer found out that while testing review copies of the PC port of Assassin's Creed 2 they got kicked out of playing the game whenever they lost their internet connection. Which simply means your game quits and you lose any progress -- with single player missions.

We've just received Assassin's Creed 2 and Settlers VII for review, and verified with Ubisoft that the DRM is the same as the boxed product. If you get disconnected while playing, you're booted out of the game. All your progress since the last checkpoint or savegame is lost, and your only options are to quit to Windows or wait until you're reconnected.

The game first starts the Ubisoft Game Launcher, which checks for updates. If you try to launch the game when you're not online, you hit an error message right away. So I tried a different test: start the game while online, play a little, then unplug my net cable. This is the same as what happens if your net connection drops momentarily, your router is rebooted, or the game loses its connection to Ubisoft's 'Master servers'. The game stopped, and I was dumped back to a menu screen - all my progress since it last autosaved was lost.

Why do software houses consistently find methods to seriously agitate end-users ? I'm sure this again is a privacy breach on so many levels ... UbiSoft .. seriously, I do not want you guys hogging my Internet bandwith. or what if I want to play the game I bought on a laptop with no WiFi available ?
