Ubisoft: Piracy's basically killing PC

EA:
In May 2008, the company reported net annual revenue of US$4.02 billion in fiscal year 2008

thats 32 BILLION RAND in 2008. c'mon now..honestly? they can't even free the prices, even by a little?

I got half life from a friend, played it and liked it lots, so when i heard half life 2 came out i rushed to the shop bought it and got deathmatch and counter strike included. Now if i want episode one and two i can`t buy them seperate.

Steam is a good idea, big online communities and free mods :)
However i would love to see options to buy games in my own currency and having a local Steam server! (Local cap)

An example, i got X3 demo and would love to play the game, however i can find the game nowhere in the shops this far on. Now its coming to steam at a $ vs. R price and then i need international bandwidth.
Surely they make enough to come to .ZA and give a local banking account...:(

At good rates i`d rather get it than crack it

The argument is that these people are yelling at out of their red ferarri's making billions, because we download the game before purchasing it - we do it because of false hype, and bad reviews.
don't you test-drive a car before buying it?

The difference though: Would Ferrari give you the car, free of charge, to take home and drive until you eventually decide to by it, risking the fact that you might not buy it and still keep the car? THAT's the difference...

Your wish... have already been granted! IS runs a local steam content server btw. Have been one in SA for years AFAIK (changed hands sometime). Check the Steam site here: http://store.steampowered.com/stats/content/ under 'View individual server statistics' ;)

PC gaming will never die, but it's definitely being hurt by piracy. A lot less is done to make better PC games, because the producers don't make their money here anymore. The money is in consoles at the moment.
I buy games that I want to play online as well as games that are really good, but I have a big problem with DRM. I discovered that Spore uses DRM after I bought it and it made me furious! DRM is the only thing that stops me from buying a really good game. Why should I be limited to 3 or 5 installs while pirates can install their working game as many times as they like

There are actually quite a few Software company's that do this.

mIRC, WinZIP, and loads more.

Even Maya and 3DsMAX have free "tryout" versions, which you can use for as long as you like - legally even!

they seem to be doing just fine.

Point? Not everyone needs to buy it for them to make millions. they are just greedy - but maybe you just can't see their greed, and are happy to feed your fat cat.

People who balk at piracy are idiots. They lose sleep over something that will NEVER (and you can quote me on that) change. It will just proliferate. The more tech savvy users get, the less they are afraid of piracy (and nasty trojans/viruses etc). More bandwidth = much more piracy.

The simple fact that you can download a pirated copy of Wii Fit (FFS! No balance board and how are you going to use it) and rock band/guitar hero just show that fighting it is a waste of time. Make games people NEED to own (the aforementioned, as well as CoD4/BF2 - seriously, single player is nothing compared to online) and sales will "magically" increase of their own accord. Not many people can set up a server for CoD4 that allows illegit copies that makes money... its bloody tough (and they will shut you down ASAP).

The box is an illusion, and the games companies are trying to make it real - nuff sed

I noticed today that Farcry 2 is out on the torrent sites for the XBOX and the pc version is yet to be pirated :D

So sure PC piracy is killing the industry...

I dont think piracy is solely to blame. I remember the golden age of pc gaming in the late 80's and early 90's with all the sierra games and so on. Piracy was rampant, in south africa that was almost the only way to get a game (anyone remember discworld on 36 stiffies...good ol dos backup).

IMHO it is just getting rediculous trying to keep up with the latest pc technology, and its a pricey hobby, with a console you know all your games will work that was released for that console, and they have great graphics.

Another thing is that the games are becomming boring and very repetitive with just a small variation in each release.

Another little irritant for me, is patching or numerous patches per game. Really, when I buy a game, I dont want to waste half of my bandwidth to download fixes that one would expect to be in the game already.

But with all that said, I still dont think pc gaming with die, its just going through a dry spell, till someone comes up with some new exciting genre or idea change

Any Idiot knows what napster is as when napster started up everyone was using it - I still see Musica selling CD's....

IF Piracy is killing the PC, then Movies, Music and Software will die too - which I don't see happening anytime soon....

When Cloud Computing becomes viable, we will see a drop in ALL forms of piracy.
