no its not really that, the bootloader on the vaio is a bit finicky and it has problems with running grub after the initial restart. Or abtleast that is what I have read

Best way then would be to try it as a Lived DVD and see what happens. Also, use EFI boot.

If it has secure boot try disabling that in bios.

Now to get one of those Intel NUC to load it on!

Dunno, I was expecting a more "convergence" orientated Unity but I believe this has been pushed back again, for now I'll opt for the Gnome3 version the performance of which now seems to be on par with Fedoras implementation - but that's just personal preference. Given 14.04's LTS status I'm keeping the Gnome3 version on a dev system for further evaluation.

One minor complaint with the installer - it lacks a basic "Overwrite existing Linux partitions" option and the advanced partitioning tool seems unduly finicky - maybe I'm just too much at home with Fedoras partitioner.

I'm tired of Unity. I wonder when Cinnamon will be updated to work on Ubuntu.

To install Cinnamon 2.2 on Ubuntu 14.04:

I've read the nightly crashes. I'm waiting for the final build to come out.

From my understanding Mint is based on Ubuntu so it would be behind on development updates?

I was thinking of Debian which seems to be the more mature and well packaged. However I have never used it so I don't know if I'd benefit from using it.

Mint is a more 'polished' ubuntu and they still use the ubuntu repos as far as i'm aware so updates should be the same. mint 17 LTS is built on ubuntu 14.04 LTS
The cinnamon experience should be better on mint seeing as they develop it and provide a prebuilt iso with it included.

Debian is very stable but you end up with older packages, has no PPAs and has an aversion to proprietary software.

Mint also has a debian version based on the testing branch you could also try, actually why don't you test them all in a VM and see how you like them.
 
Thought I would give it a go on my HP microserver.

Found a few annoying "features"

When installing server edition, if the network interface is configured automatically grub installation will fail. So setting up the network manually everything installs just fine.

Then changing the interface back to DHCP is easy. Restarting the interface might not be so.

service networking restart fails and /etc/init.d/networking restart as well.

This was "broken" on purpose!
