With Linux, it's always a given you should get the latest version as it means the kernel is more likely to support your hardware out the box.

Shouldn't have any problems with that machine. Just be carefull with where you're installing it. See some confusion on the horizon.

Hi Drake2007

I'm hopefully going to install it on G:

Hard Drive 1
C:= XP Pro
G:= Jaunty

Hard Drive 2
E:= ISo image of C:
D:= Vista

I am downloading Jaunty but don't know which version:confused: Halfway there another 5 hours to go:eek:

Thanks for the info i will no doubt be going on a huge learning curve in the next few days. Also been studying the posts in the forums and finding lots of hints.

Thank you everybody

OK easiest way, totally delete that G: partition in XP, when linux comes to install
it'll find that freespace and normally just do it's thing. Just keep an eye on it
should be going to /dev/hda2

Well got Jaunty 9.0.4 installed no problem everything works :D Sound etc. It's unbelievable i'm hooked for life. Goodbye Win cr@p.

This OS really flies.

Now one question please help guys.

I deleted Vista off (formatted) Hard drive 2 and loaded Linux on it I still have xp on Hard drive 1 now when i boot i do not get an option between the 2.

I have been physically disconnecting the hard i dont want to boot into. How do i fix this?

Thanks all:D

Well you will have to edit grub I suppose, I'm not really versed in that but an alternative is that at boot time hold down the drive selection key (for the ASUS mobos i think it's f8)

This will allow you to choose a harddrive to boot.

+1 for this. Much easier (for someone new) than getting grub (the bootloader than will allow you to choose an OS at boot time) up and running. That said, getting grub to work isn't all that hard. So if you decide to take the plunge, feel free to let us know.

Ta for the reply

I think i could takr the plunge on the grub could you guys help out on that please?

I have downloaded Wubi.exe woul that help at all?

Help, pulling hair out.
Can somebody help me with the Grub B/L please, to dual boot Xp on one drive and Jaunty on H/D 2 Thanks

You need to set the BIOS boot option to the drive which Grub is loaded on (I assume that's the Jaunty HDD). You'll need to edit menu.lst using

sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

to ensure that the entry for Windows is correct.

Some info here

Thanks got it sorted, slowly getting the hang of things not to bad for a 46 year old fart. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks
