Here goes for a first thread started by me :D

I have a fedora core 4 server that I need to upgrade. I was thinking about giving ubuntu a go, but since I also want to play around on the machine (desktop related activities) I was looking for a ubuntu install DVD. Fedora comes with a DVD where you can choose between server/desktop/all and I thought there will be something similar for ubuntu.

After looking around I cannot seem to find a dvd, only 2 cd versions. Is there something like this or am I searching for something that does not exists?

Now why would you use torrents when you can download the ISO from a local site?

except torrent.ubuntu.com is not a local site. IS do not have the DVD of 8.04, which is what was asked for. I tried downloading the ISO direct from Ubuntu, and it kept timing out after about 1 GB, but torrent came down in little less than a day on a 512kb line.

Nope. They are CD images, which is correct, but for different architectures. i386 and AMD architectures. The DVD has quite a few more packages on it, which are not on the cd images, you would have to download them from the online repositories. There are probably 4 CD images on the IS site (too lazy to go check now). Each one of them contain basically the same packages. IS should've got the DVD image on there by now, but obviously not yet. Hence my recommendation of the torrent file.

Likewise, if you live in Natal, near Hillcrest, I can give you a copy of it.

Aaah... tx!

Damn... sounds like we are. The last time I reinstalled, I did it from the cd, then just installed whatever I required off the local repositories.
