Ubuntu is open source, so I wonder what is stopping Samsung and the rest to built a phone for this OS

Did you guys not read the article or watch the video?

This is exactly what they want, they are hoping to get other companies to build the hardware. The edge is more a proof of concept project which will have a limited production run and hoping most of the uptake will be by developers/software companies and the phone will become a testing ground for new apps and technologies. They clearly said they are not trying to enter the hardware market & would like other companies to get on board in building the hardware for future devices. Right now this project is aimed at geeks and not your average consumer.

Hmm. I'm wondering - what would we be willing to pay for the device?
Maybe form a consortium, approach them with a offer for 100 handsets if we contribute x?

I'm trying real hard to justify R6000 for a phone, for me its a tool I replace every 2 years, not a Media server I keep on upgrading..

So you've basically invested in something that the company selling at EOL. The support is going to be fantastic.

So after the first 24 hours:
$3,449,423 raised

$20 x 1254
$600 x 5044 of 5000
$830 x 330
$10,000 x 3 of 50
$80,000 x 0

Those numbers is right, but the $600 option fell away, and they added some new ones, 1000 phone versions for $625 / $675 / $ 725

I'm interested to know more about this "Sapphire Crystal" screen that "you would have to be walking around with diamonds in your pocket" to scratch it.

Just out of interest sake, what happens to your money if they don't get to the target?

Ok so the whole Ubuntu phone concept gets dropped?

hehe

No, the Ubuntu phone is a separate thing, that is happening separately. Phone makers are releasing phones with Ubuntu on.

Ubuntu Edge is a conceptual phone that Canonical is making with Ubuntu on. If they don't make the 32 bar then they will just can the Edge, the other phones will still get released.

This is sort of a launch for the OS and also to push the tech.

They are sitting on $6,347,730 with 27 days to go... so they really are doing well.

It gets refunded.

So from what I can gather, IGG is not like Kickstarter, where Kickstarter only charges you if the campaign reaches its funding. IGG will charge you (via PayPal), and refund your money to PayPal if unsuccessful.

Now, isn't it a mission to get money out of your paypal account? And aren't there fees involved? So my thinking is, it makes sense to see if they meet their funding, and then choose whether to get a phone, even if it's at $830.

The phone will only be available to funders. If they reach their target then orders for the phone will close.
