Ubuntu fans take note

Voice control is obviously something that has been tried before. In the past it gave rise to an interesting security hole. Hijack sites would have audio commands built in which would play over the speakers and get picked up by the microphone. It was advised that if you used voice command that you turned your speakers off while away from the computer. Wonder if the new system will be able to circumvent this?

I don't know why people want to dump Ubuntu so quickly just because they don't like the default DE.

You do you can install XFCE,KDE,LXDE,Openbox,E17,Gnome-Shell or just about any other DE, you don't have to use Unity.

Yup, this is going to draw the Windows user over to Ubuntu.

Not.

You can't look at tablets in same way as desktops, they're essentially consumer fashion devices like smartphones. Purchasers are unlikely to be OS fanboys or ZDNet readers instead they'll buy based on fashion dictates and their peers opinions. They wont give a damn about what OS it's running just what it can do and the available apps.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Mark come out with a branded tablet UEFI locked to Ubuntu - thereby cocking a snoot at MS :D

Unity works really well with my touch screen. Im not against it. All the other distro`s look the same, so if you dont like it, there are hundreds of desktops doing the same thing.

Gradually Ubuntu has been removing many of the traditional control features

There's the problem. Removing the way things have been done, and adding a new way to do things would be fine if the new way was better. But it isn't.

If he chose to add new features that are easy to switch on and off, nobody would be complaining.

I cannot for the life of me understand why people fail to see the coming intensification of the touch revolution in the runup to the release of Windows 8... Speech recognition is cool in some aspects of computing, especially mobile and in car, but the desktop will move to touch this year. Focus on that Mark! In fact you could have led the pack with an early release of a suped up touch version of Linux!!!! Come on! Seriously!!?!

Linux fanboys getting rid of their keyboards? WHAT?!! :p

I can;t see desktops going touchscreen. Maybe in the form factor of a flat screen lying flat on a table in boardrooms for planning and collaboration. Other than that, no. Touchscreens suck when you do lots of typing which secrataries and programmers usually do. And what about data capture etc? This is what PCs are mostly used for IMHO.

I must admit that this unity interface looks pretty cool and may just convince me to get a Linux distro running - for funzies.

Hey! It's like a command line for noobs! :p

+1

I'm using Debian Squeeze KDE and happy. Hated the 'sudo' concept of Ubuntu.

Do you mind clarifying what you mean by this? I use Debian Squeeze and it uses sudo as well.

I have a 19" HD touchscreen on my desk. With unity installed, I find myself using it more than I normally would. It makes no sense if your mind is locked into more traditional ways of doing things... but when you got a decent sized touch screen with unity you find yourself using it more than you realized. Instead of your hand going for the mouse, you just tap on the screen what you want to do.

And the fingerprints, don't they bother you?

I have four screens on my (work) desk. The most far left one is the MSI (slightly smaller version of this http://www.msi.com/product/aio/Wind-Top-AE2210.html ) all in one system. The two 19" screens on the right of my desk are for normal work and grunt stuffs. And there is another monitor attached to a monitoring server between the msi and the 2 19"`s.

I use the MSI for mostly multimedia.

This is going to be awesome. Once you get used to this and get good at using it it's going to speed up productivity a lot, I think. Or at least it's going to make a lot of things a lot more effortless. Aside from that, the possibilities this opens up for voice control is also pretty cool, even though I don't see myself using it with voice. They keyboard and mouse is still faster and easier than anything else.
