Ubuntu for dummies:

Yep - but that doesn't look like the whole file. Is there a line anywhere there that says anything about /home/<your name>/firefox ? (Arrow keys to scroll up/down)

This is my original sources.list file.

Okay in Adept - have a look in the menu for something that says something like edit sources. In synaptic (similar to Adept) it's under Settings > Repositories. See if you can edit in there?

I cant even open Adept because it says the APT database is probably not configured correctly. It just closes on its own after that message...

Sorry, edited my post after I saw you'd found the offending line. Just delete everything after multiverse (from that excerpt!). Crtl-X to close and Y to save.

Is that on one line or two? Doesn't matter - just delete everything after multiverse. Crtl-X to close and Y to save.

Hey, that worked!!!! Lovely! Thanks Chiskop. As gratitude I promise not to call you Klitskop for an entire week :D...

Cool.

Not sure how that got in there, but you never learn if you don't break things. :)

I broke many things before. My daddy showed me how it hurts :D

I think it happened when I tried to install FF using the terminal (trying to teach myself and all that). Obviously sent the wrong command and royally fscked it up. But I love the fact that the errors dont hang the operating system or give me a BSOD - awesome!!!

Um yep, I think we all knew that, but I didn't want to hurt your feelings. :D

What feelings? :D

OK, next issue - no sound. There was sound the first time but nothing anymore. I ran some commands last night which indicated that the OS is picking up my sound card (Intel built in) but there is no sound. Amarok indicates that it is playing as I can see the graphic equalizers moving around...

I opened Kaffeine and it just installs all the right codecs now that I have internet connectivity - sweet. And VLC is installed just in case.

Amarok has downloaded mp3 support.

I finally know how to install correctly as well. But maybe someone can show me how to install from file using the terminal instead of adept. For when I download something and want to install without using Adept...

I am liking Linux all of a sudden...

Have a look here - ubuntuforums is your friend. :)

I know that you think you need to know how to do that, because that's how things are done in windows, but trust me on this... you will very seldom need to install from a random file.

But okay, if the app you need isn't in the repositories, look for a .deb file, download it, right click and install (at least I think kubuntu gives you that option).

If you can't find a .deb, then you'll need to look for a file that looks something like myapp-1.2.03.tar.gz, and follow the instructions here.
But don't do it. You really won't need to install apps like that, and there are plenty of good reasons not to.

OK, now I am starting to get really frustrated with this again FFS!

I used the terminal (because I need to get a little experience with it) to install the restricted packages. It evetually got to a Sun Microsystems Terms and Conditions Page with <ok> at the bottom of the page. I tried pressing enter - nothing. I tried y then enter - nothing. I waited. Tried again. Nothing. So I closed it and figured it would just stop the process and I could start over using Adept instead. Oh no - it closed nothing. Adept wont open because it says another app is using the package management. I cant find it in the processes to kill it. I have tried restarting - nothing. I have shut down and tried again but no, nothing.

I have tried typing in apt-get purge but that gives me an error and asks if I am root? Opening the terminal just opens a new session with no indication of the one that is still supposedly running.

WTF do I do? Its really starting to piss on my battery with this whole terminal rubbish. I wish the support sites would link the the package managers instead of directing people to do things they have no idea about. I am getting really mad now...

That's what happens when you jump in the deep end too soon, should start of with the repo manager first you'll always have a chance to mess with terminal.

Repo manager? More jargon to me. Well the only reason I chose to do it this way was because every single mother-trucking site refers to it. They dont realise that there are n00bs out there who havent a clue how the fsck this motherfscking terminal piece of sh1te fscking works. As you can tell, I am rather calm at the moment.

TBH, setting up Windows took a lot less time and was a lot more frustrating. I am starting to think the BSOD is worth it...
