Oh and MAC OS is based on old BSD code.....

Don't judge things before you tried them, I was mentioning it for companies that normally go for support rather than just something thats just free.

KDE ftw!!

Xfce, is the best desktop environment in my humble opinion, for the following reason:

Packed with the true freedom of GTK+. Sexy in its' own right and most importantly more, for less.

Nothing, can beat that(yet).

Played around with Xfce and found it to be lean and mean - a good choice for PC's which doesn't have enough RAM or struggles to run KDE.

Funny that - I tried XFCE, and still came back to KDE. I love that it is an integrated solution - I can run all KDE-based apps on my 256MB RAM laptop with no hassles. The trick is to keep away from non-KDE apps.

I'm currently trying out Kubuntu with KDE 4, but I don't think I'll mever take a liking to it. Much prefer KDE 3. I need to check out Lotus Symphony tho. btw 'Synoptic' is spelt 'Synaptic'.

I'm just tired of people criticizing a product because they have this or that problem with a operating system but at the end of the day it's the hardware vendor that one needs to blame.

I agree somewhat. They 1st need to give you a reason to switch.... but they also need to make it possible. Else what's the point?

I have seen a big shift in the open source community in the last few years. People are finally "getting" what's needed on the desktop. To me the priority for a desktop environment has always been to be unobtrusive. This basically means

1) It must "just work". I don't want to spend hours messing with KDE settings just to hear some audio
2) The desktop must be quick and it must "feel" responsive (i.e. If I click, it must respond immediately, every time).
3) The focus must be on the applications. It must not take up to much screen real estate.
4) Last, but not least, it must look nice.

3 of those 4 points are just not achievable without good hardware support.

The hardware support in Macs has always been the major reason their desktop is king. They get 1) right and mostly get 2) right. They were even one of the 1st to use the 3d card to assist with 4).

Its unfortunate, but without hardware support... Gnome/KDE/Whatever will always be the poor cousin.

The 3G/HSDPA support is painless and I understand that the plan is to have all the bugs with with WPA ironed out by the time Intrepid is released.

Edit: Its the SVN version i'm using... not the beta. May be a little too bleeding edge for some

I agree on all 4 points and also about why Apples' are so nice to use(If you have the money). But that is also where Ubuntu is heading, with Dell shipping it on their computers.

Because if a vendor ships a operating on their hardware I assume the operating system was tested with the hardware and that any glitches or bugs specific to the hardware will be sorted out.
