Ubuntu slips to fourth place

Ubuntu slipped even further this month after other distros had some mayor releases late last month and this month, it is now fourth overall for this month:

This does not say much, except that there is a sharp drop in interest in Ubuntu in general. If you view this graph http://royal.pingdom.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/ubuntu-mint.0022.jpg you can clearly see a downward trend for Ubuntu.

Also note the sharp interest in Mint in 2011, that will soon level out now that Gnome 3 has come to Mint I expect.

What is interesting is that Fedora and Debian seems to be the most stable distros with a bunch of dedicated followers.

I was Ubuntu user since 7.10 and Unity/Gnome 3 was primary reason to start using linuxmint
 
Using distrowatch to judge the number of users = massive massive fail.

They got pretty all their information from distrowatch.

I wouldn't trust it.

It measures page views to each distributions’s information page. For example, when you visit distrowatch.com/arch, that adds a little bit to Arch’s relative popularity on Distrowatch.

Have you tried Mint 12 yet? I really like how they implemented Gnome Shell. I love it. Looks really polished also. I HATED unity.

Not yet, using mint 11 64 bit and waiting end of the month - few GB left ;-)

It is well worth it. I even made a donation of $5.00 I like it so much :-)

Only problem that I have picked up so far is my Icon theme sometimes reverts to a hell of a ugly one by itself. I think this has something to do with Opera Browser though. Seems to happen everytime once I close Opera. Hope it will be fixed soon.

Look in the Mint 12 thread for the link I posted about tweaking Mint, there is an option to counter this in the shell.

Ohhhhhhhhh ok thanks meneer. I have not had a look at the link properly yet as I am pretty happy the way it is now. Just thought this changing of the icon theme by itself is a bug and I will have to wait for it to be fixed. You soooo clever! :-)
 
Next release needs some major changes when it comes to unity.

It's usable but a bit of a fail as it makes more work for the user.

Your Gnome 3 is still there and you can select which "fripperies?" you want to enable via the gnome-tweak-tool, in my case a small selection of favourites in the top panel and, the biggie, 12 (stacked 4 by 3) fixed workspaces in the bottom panel. 2 mouse clicks to open a new terminal in a selected workspace :D
 
I am new to Linux, been trying ubuntu 11.10 now for a while, really loving it :) I don't understand the hostility towards unity as I tried it as well as the gnome shell, I stuck to the unity as it was something different. I've gotten really used to it now... It's not without fault but hated? I just run that compwiz and customise my desktop to crazy so the unity bar is a minimal issue :P ? anyhow each to his on I reckon, besides still new to linux :)

p.s. playonlinux is awesome :P
