These are actually Gnome tweaks but I've only tested these on Ubuntu, here goes...
For these tweaks you'll be using the gconf-editor, to launch it press alt+F2, a “Run Application” window will appear, type "gconf-editor" then click Run.
*Be sure to backup your configuration before making changes*
Make Gnome use less resources:
If under 'appearance preferences' you have 'Effects' set to 'None' you'll have a low resource desktop already but it is possible to reduce resources even more...
Using Gconf go to:
->apps->metacity->general
Tick the 'reduced_resources" box to enable.
Desktop icons visible:
By default in ubuntu there is no home or computer icon available, this tweak allows the home folder icon, computer icon and trash icon to be visible on the desktop...
Using Gconf go to:
->apps->nautilus->desktop
Tick any of the "_icon_visible" options to make this icon visible, changes are immediate.
Change the location of the titlebar buttons:
Some users may want to change the location of the close, minimise, maximise buttons to the right as in mac os.
Using Gconf go to:
->apps->metacity->general
Find the key named "button_layout", the value of the key would be 'menu:minimize,maximize,close' by default.
For the the right position simply modify this as 'close,maximize,minimize:menu'.
Change Ubuntu menu icon to your own:
You may not like the look of the Ubuntu Icon on your menubar/panel, this tweak allows you to change it...
Using Gconf go to:
->apps->panel->objects
Find an object_x where the "object_type" = "menu-object"
Tick the "use_custom_icon" then change "custom_icon" value to the image path of your choice.
