Ubuntu Unity is not all that unifying

I also upgraded my dev PC at work and broke my GDM - but that did not surprise me at all, there is a reason why its my dev PC :) and I also screwed up the upgrade. I set my sources.list to natty and did not do a proper upgrade

Toaster at UCT not working, so I smooth talked some guy from a lab to fish out ubuntu-11.04-desktop-amd64.iso. Then I booted from USB just to try out first.

But where is unity? This has Gnome 2.32.1

Risky stuff changing the scroll bar. It looks crappy and doesn't respond well to mouse overs. Having essential interface elements float in and out is bad decision in my opinion. They should create stable system and leave all the flicky bling crap to iPads pleash. So many more important improvements they could be working on.

Why should I upgrade?
 
Ok so after upgrading my ubuntu box which funny enough gave me no problems at all I decided to stick with it before making any rash decisions.

At first I did not like it at all, the side panel especially.

I have changed my mind though, sure it needs a bit of tweaks here and there but once you get used to the navigation you can't help but love it. With its hotkey navigation I get things done extremely fast.

I will still stick to XFCE for my main box but Unity is an excellent shell. People just need to get used to the changes.
 
I first upgraded to kubuntu natty (having been used to KDE for too long) and stuff just froze and crashed and my home folder got trashed at some point, so I decided to try plain ubuntu before moving to a new distro for the fun of it. Turns out Unity is so much nicer than I could ever have imagined. I don't care how it compares to gnome. For the first time ever I could use my phone as a bluetooth modem without digging into config scripts and manually running commands.

Everything just looks prettier now for some reason and with many laptops (mine too) now having a terrible resolution of 1366x768, a netbook optimised interface seems appropriate. You notice the extra bits of space, but more importantly, it feels like this is how it should be. I tried putting KDE panels all over the screen in various auto-hide kinds of setups and it always felt like a maximised window is sort of falling off the side.

All in all, Unity gained a non-gnome fan.

LOL I was on campus just a few days ago and noticed that the toaster wasn't working so I thought I would check in on the thread to see how you'd gone locating 11.04. I'm glad to see that you found it.


But where is unity? This has Gnome 2.32.1
