Ubuntu Unity is not all that unifying

I attempted an upgrade, but after re-aligning all the channels it fails. I'll wait a while, till work pressure subdues and I can do a fresh install. Does all normal LAMP dev software work on it... like Apache, MySQL+Workbench, PHP, Netbeans, Eclipse, xdebug, Firefox, Chrome?? Would be nice to know before upgrading!

we installed it at more or less the same time with w1z4rd, and so KDE proved to be much better than Unity. i am excited about the switch. actually, Unity helped me move on to KDE, so, it's useful enough :)

Yup, also on the Kubuntu (KDE) bandwagon now. It's cool. :)

How is this different from the old interface? Click Applications > Games > Solitaire (3 Clicks)

This is suppose to be like that, where else is the Slider suppose to go if it's maximized and there is no space left on the 'outside' of the screen. It won't compromise the size of the maximized application just for a 'future' scroll bar.

You get used to the interface, if you know most of the shortcuts, things are much easier than before.
PS. For all those complaining about the Unity interface and threatening to switch OS's. Before you login, just select Gnome Classic instead of Unity if you don't like it.

DUDE! Seriously, everyone is freaking out and changing.
Just select the "classic" Desktop before logging in, should remember your selection.
 
Installed 11.04, Love Unity. Global menu is awesome and saves a lot of space on netbooks.
Love the new scroll bars, so clever. Like how you can move over that thin bar and the main scroller comes up and you can just click its up/down parts in place (better than moving the mouse around) and scroll like that or obviously grab and drag. Obviously some apps won't support it yet.

I tried gnome3, cant go back to classic.
 
I did a clean install of 11.04, so app wise, things tend to run flawlessly (well, as flawlessly as things run on linux ;P )

As for Unity....for me, it's currently, at best, meh...

I can see the ideas are there, but unfortunately, again to me, they are just that, ideas. Win95/8 had awesome ideas, but it took many years to refine them. And even now with Win7, people are bitching. So yeah, there will always be people who complain about new stuff. New stuff is just that, new, it's going to take time to work out the kinks.

So, for the time being, I just shrug my shoulders and carry on.

What I can say, though, is that I don't like dash. I can't shake the feeling that it's trying to keep my from seeing my apps.
Also, one of the first things I did, was download the customization tool, so I could autohide the launcher, and make the icons much, much smaller.
 
sofar I prefer the old look but am giving unity a few more days.

I have also mixed classic with unity and that seems better.
 
How can I get it without downloading?
Know of any Internet cafes in Cape Town with an amd64 copy?

Amazing. I only ever tried to upgrade once and that was years and years ago. After it all went totally pear-shaped I decided "fool me once" and all that. Haven't dared to try it since then. sounds as though they may have sorted out at least some of the bugs with the upgrading route.

Good news honestly.

There is one at UCT, one at UWC and one in town. I used to use the one at that Science Centre in Canal Walk but then I got the uncapped interwebz. Besides I think they've shut the Science Centre down now so I don't know what happened to that toaster.
