This wont ever happen.. If its not whatsapp, there will be something else... The statement is naive and said by a Toff with no understanding of 'How Stuff works'. You dont need an encryption system to keep things secret.. Very easy to make a one-time-pad and use in-the-clear communications channels if the reason is to be cited as 'The bad Terries'

Cameron first said this before FB/Gmail/Hotmail all defaulted to HTTPS. The online scene has since changed in retaliation to the alleged snooping.

Car companies where ordered to make their on-board computers 'Unhackable' too!

Another Whatsapp marketting bul@#$%^. I woudn't care of banning Whatsapp. They talk laud about encrypting messages, but user has absolutely no control whether particular message will be encrypted or not. Not a serious approach for privacy.

The new version of Whatsapp is supposed to be end to end encrypted now. It's probably the most secure messenger system available (for text messages).

As a result, they announced a new partnership with Open Whisper Systems in a deal that would finally bring end-to-end encryption to the service, hopefully banishing the gremlins of the previous three years.

Open Whisper said the new encryption would be the largest of its kind anywhere in the world, and would use TextSecure – a service which uses a cryptographic key that’s unique to individual devices – to protect its giant user base.

Experts were quickly impressed, as Wired claimed the solution was “practically uncrackable“, and the Wall Street Journal stated that “the encryption is so robust that even the law enforcement won’t be able to decrypt WhatsApp messages“.

Instead of storing the keys for unscrambling the encryption on a centralised server that’s owned and operated by the WhatsApp developers, end-to-end encryption works by instead only storing the keys on a user’s device. When combined with TextSecure, which uses a protocol called “forward secrecy” to issue a fresh key for every new message

How it relate to the point I made? You can use the most secure engine, but lousy implementation like in current version makes this feature useless.

Besides, key exchange is always a weak point on public networks. In Whatsapp there is no provision for manual key verification, so you have absolutely no idea whether there is a middle-man intercepting communication.

You proclaimed Whatsapp weren't serious about privacy, as they now encrypt all text messages to a degree that they can't be cracked by anyone would show your ranting is without basis.

This is nonsence. You don't even know whether your message goes out encrypted or not. You have no indication of it, as I wrote in my first post. Do you understand what you are talking about?

Far more than you, it seems. How hard is it to understand that all text messages are encrypted? Is there some other way of communicating that to you?

He is saying whatsapp enabled end to end encryption. "text messages" in his context don't equal SMS.

Seems that there is yet another twist...seems the reporter that posted the previous change about them *not* going for no encryption got it wrong.

i.e. they still plan on not allowing unbreakable encryption in as yet unclear situations aka can't decided / don't know what they want

Nope. This is purely your assumption, probably a reason you failed to understand. Whatsapp will still comunicate with older clients (which do not support encryption) and is not giving any warning about this.

I'm not convinced the taxpayers are paying them to oppress the taxpayers.

To address the "the criminals are not stupid, they will just find new ways" argument.. Some criminals will, others are most definitely stupid. Pledging allegience to ISIS on facebook a week before they carry out an attack.. Using military desktops to access terrorist material.. Trying to groom a computer generated child.. So many fkn morons to catch.
