That is what was reported when the news first broke on BBC, guess we'll have to wait for the dust to settle for the actual facts to emerge.

That story seems to have been wrong, and recounted by someone who arrived after the intial attack and saw the killer grappling with the guy who tried to help.

The intial account of an altercation was from a man who had been inside the nearby cafe. He went outside and saw a man grappling with the attacker.

He was then contradicted by a second eye-witness, a man called Clarke Rothwell, who was actually outside the cafe when the incident started and who seems to have been one of first sources of the attacker shouting "Britain first" or "Put Britain first".

The assumption, I think, must be that the first witness arrived on scene as a passer-by attempted to intervene. Clarke Rothwell, although still sounding slightly shocked in the interview, was sure that the attacker had been waiting for Jo Cox and went for her before anyone else was involved.

Clarke Rothwell is equally clear (even some time after the event) that the words "Britain First!" were used though he was uncertain as to whether they were preceded with "Put". This was in a telephone interview he gave to BBC News.

The gas fitter who witnessed the brutal killing of MP Jo Cox has told how her assailant had shouted 'Britain first' as he shot and repeatedly stabbed the mother-of-two.

Labour MP Ms Cox, 41, was shot three times, once in the head, with an 'antique gun', and stabbed at least seven times as she arrived to meet constituents for her regular surgery in Birstall, near Leeds.

Eyewitness Clarke Rothwell, 42, who was working near to the murder scene, said the man - named locally as 52-year-old 'loner' and handyman Tommy Mair - shouted 'Britain first' as he launched the attack on the mother-of-two, which occurred at around 1pm.

‘The words I heard him say were Britain first, or put Britain first,' Mr Rothwell told BBC Newsnight.

'I can’t say exactly what it was but definitely Britain first is what he said, what he was shouting. He shouted it at least twice

'I became aware it was a gun,' he said. 'I turned around to look what the noise was. I heard a woman screaming and a guy bent over a woman.

'I could see her leg sticking out and what looked like a gun in his hand.

'Then he proceeded to shoot her again. She was on the floor, she was crawling about.
'The other two women with her were wrestling to try to get this guy off them. He was wielding a knife.'

In an earlier interview, Mr Rothwell said the attacker stabbed Ms Cox with a large knife, and that the gun had resembled a 'musket'.

He said: 'He was stabbing her with a foot-long knife multiple times while shouting 'Britain first, Britain first, Britain first'.

'Three times she was shot, the initial time which then she dropped to the floor, and two more times.
'The third time he got close proximity, he shot her round the head area.'

He added: 'In the meantime he was stabbing her as well, he was stabbing her with his knife.'
Describing the gun, he said: 'He seemed to have what looked like an old gun, like a musket, in his hand and he shot her again in the middle.

'He then seemed to shoot a third time, towards her head or face. He was also stabbing at her with what looked like a hunting knife, about a foot long. He was stabbing her and waving the knife around.

'A man who I know... tried to get near but the man swung his knife around and caught him in the stomach. Blood started coming out.'

Mr Rothwell said his friend 'tried to grab him, wrestling with him,' but the killer lunged at the MP 'half a dozen times' with the knife.

He said the sound of the gunshots sparked pandemonium, with people 'screaming and running from the area'.
Mr Rothwell said he attempted to follow the attacker in his van and saw him dump his jacket on the ground, possibly in an attempt to change his appearance.

Another witness, Graeme Howard, 38, told the Guardian that he had also heard the attacker shout 'Britain first' before the shooting and during the arrest.

'I heard the shot and I ran outside and saw some ladies from the cafe running out with towels,' said Mr Howard, who lives close to the scene. 'There was loads of screaming and shouting and the police officers showed up.

'He was shouting "Britain first" when he was doing it and being arrested. He was pinned down by two police officers and she was taken away in an ambulance.'

ITV News are reporting the police are saying it was not a random attack and Jo Cox was the intended target, they have also said the killer is considered sufficiently mentally stable to be questioned.

Brexit didn't create him. Politicians who ignored their electorate and continued mass immigration after being voted in promising to stop it created him.
His views long predate any talk of Brexit.
 
Some of the US papers have gone with a similar Brexit slant to the story as well, just not the banner headline, for example the Wall Street Journal.

Most definitely Brexit didn't create him, though his views and attitude have been twisted and exacerbated by the poison from the right wing, from people like Farage, Griffin, Robinson, Golding and all those who preceded them.

He was moulded by the vitriol of UKIP, BNP, EDL, Britain First, the National Front and all the vicious rubbish their acolytes spout in places like Facebook.

As someone said, Farage isn't to blame for her death but his policies and lies put some of the responsibility on him...

There is definitely a sentiment, among nationalists anyway, that the current system is set up to cater for immigrants somehow, instead of British nationals.

The minimum wage has hardly budged in almost 10 years since I was last here - it's no wonder lower jobs are filled with foreigners that are more than happy to earn the minimum, because it's lucrative compared to what they'd earn back home. Unfortunately, British people know full well it's nearly impossible to survive on that (even with something like London's living wage added onto it) - so they're ultimately frozen out of the low skill job market if they want more money, because a business owner would rather employ someone from another country who'd jump at the chance to earn pittance.

Housing seems to be another issue, with numerous cases coming out recently where foreigners have been given preference over people who are born here when it comes to council houses.

So yes, locals are getting angry because they feel like their own government cares more for immigrants than them. It's understandable.

But violence and murder will never be the answer.

A government that correctly controls immigration would appease ALL Britains (on both sides). Unfortunately, because of the EU's free movement policy, that can not, and will not ever happen while the UK is a member. So clearly, Cameron's bull**** regarding controlling the number of immigrants that come over is just that: bull****. He's not allowed to change anything. The only way the UK can slow immigration is from the Commonwealth.
 
Brexit is never going to happen just like scottish independence was never going to happen, the average population there is not that stoopid. They like making a bit of noise about these things but that's about where it ends.

RIP to the poor lady.

You've clearly never had to share public transport in London with some of the locals...

If we do stay in the EU, it's because Remain's most successful threat was this: we'll have to pay more for overseas holidays/flights and roaming charges. No, I'm not kidding. I actually overheard young people talking about it on the bus, and out of EVERYTHING that could possibly happen, THAT was their biggest concern...

The loner suspected of killing Jo Cox appeared deeply disturbed just 24 hours before the attack, a health counsellor said last night.
Thomas Mair said after stumbling into a 'well-being centre' on Wednesday night that he was depressed and had been on medication for a long time.
Mair's psychiatric history is at the heart of the police inquiry into the attack – and officers are also said to be investigating links to far-Right groups.
The counsellor who spoke to him for about 15 minutes on Wednesday said she realised he was in 'some sort of crisis' and there appeared to be a 'real problem'.

Britain has a serious mental health issue - to be more accurate, the way it handles people who are mentally ill. If I'm not mistaken, this is one of just several attacks this year in the UK carried out by someone who shouldn't really be allowed in public.

Well, it looks like the "Britain first" statement has a lot more credence as of this morning.

The man charged with the murder of Labour MP Jo Cox has appeared in court and been remanded in custody.

Thomas Mair gave his name as "Death to traitors, freedom for Britain" when he appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court.
