Yeah, that pretty much proves it, I reckon: nuttier than a fruit cake. Of course, they're going to do everything in their power to prove otherwise - they don't take it lightly when someone kills an MP it seems.

In response to the other comment made regarding what the UK will ban next, it's really not a case of banning anything. The UK needs to look after its mentally ill. There's no law here that prevents the insane from leaving an institution. So they're free to live among us. Yes, they have rights, etc, but when one's rational mind has gone out the window years ago, and you have no regard for your own safety and wellbeing, and in the most recent case of Jo Cox, no regard for the rights and wellbeing of others, where do we draw the line? Mental health services KNOW who they've treated - surely they need to ensure that they're keeping tabs on everyone? Do occasional check ups at least?!
 
This statement from Britain First made during the London Mayoral election now sounds a little like the source of Mair's statement.

Though the imbeciles haven't realised the same photo is still available on their website. The Muslim harassment event where he was photographed is supposedly a 20 minute from his house.

Handguns can still be purchased, actually. But like other firearms, have to be modified for single shot only. I don't believe it's possible to legally purchase functioning magazines, either, and revolvers have to have up to 4 of the chambers closed up. Oh, and you have to be a member of a competitive shooting club to own one. I speak subject to correction, but my info comes from coworkers who own firearms - in the UK. One has a .357 revolver that has an extended barrel and a stock, so it's no longer classed as a revolver. It's been heavily modified and he uses it for competitions only.

You are right, handguns under a certain length are prohibited (as opposed to banned in the conventional sense, but only the Home Secretary can authorise a certificate to possess a handgun so far all intents they are banned for most people). I thought that point of law might be too much and confuse some posters.
People add a stock and longer barrel to get around the prohibition.

You can also own a 2 shot revolver if involved in what the law calls "humane dispatch" of animals.

Edit to add,

the single shot function applies to handguns and large calibre rifles. You can still have a .22 calibre rifle in semi auto, as well as a semi-auto shotgun. You can also licence high capacity shotguns on a firearms certificate.

I just find it amusing to see people's perceptions change according to the scenario, depending on their standpoints and beliefs (not directed at you btw). One minute the killer's motives are secondary to the fact that guns are the problem (as we saw in Orlando) and in the next scenario we have a "right-wing", "nazi apparel-wielding" maniac threatening the free world by murdering someone - with a gun. And guns aren't even mentioned.

No one has said that the gun was a problem, not in any of the reports I've seen (and it's even been on my local news as it isn't that far away), the rifle was held illegally, probably because as a person with mental issues he would never have been granted a firearm certificate.

Shotguns and rifles are seen as tools, they seem to have completely escaped the bad reputation handguns did here.

You might think that the Leave campaign and organisations like Britain First might be getting a little pissed off with the way the Jo Cox killing is snowballing into a worldwide event and casting a bad light over them.


Thousands of people are expected to attend events around the world on Wednesday to celebrate what would have been Labour MP Jo Cox’s birthday.

Mrs Cox would have been 42, and commemorations are being planned to celebrate her “warmth, love, energy, passion and flair”.

The MP shares the same birthday with Bernard Kenny, the pensioner who was injured when he stepped in to try to help her as she was shot and stabbed to death, who will be 78.

Events are being held in Mrs Cox’s constituency of Batley and Spen while a main commemoration will take place in London’s Trafalgar Square, which will be preceded by a floating commemoration on the River Thames.

People are also expected to gather and mark her birthday in Brussels, New York, Washington and Nairobi.

Her family and friends said in a statement: “Our gift to her, her family and all those who loved and cherished her, will be to come together to show the world there is more that unites us than divides us.

“The coming together of thousands of people in love and solidarity with Jo proves the strength of her ideas and values.

“Supporters will come together to celebrate what Jo’s warmth, love, energy, passion, flair, Yorkshire heritage and belief in the humanity of every person in every place, from Batley and Spen to Aleppo and Daraya
