An MP has died after she was shot and stabbed in a "horrific" assault in her constituency, police have said.
Jo Cox, Labour MP for Batley and Spen, was left bleeding on the ground after the attack in West Yorkshire. A 52-year-old man was arrested nearby.
One eyewitness told the BBC they heard her attacker shout "put Britain first" at least twice beforehand.
Tributes flooded in from politicians including David Cameron, Jeremy Corbyn and US Secretary of State John Kerry.
Mrs Cox's husband Brendan said she would want people "to unite to fight against the hatred that killed her".

The killer is being said to have an SA connection. Pro-apartheid supporter tosomething called the SA Patriot, followed by a group called the Springbok Club.

The man arrested over the killing of Labour MP Jo Cox is believed to have had long-term links with a hard-right group based in London which had been campaigning for many years for Britain to leave the European Union.

Witnesses to the fatal attack on Ms Cox say they heard Mair shout “Britain First” as the MP was shot and then stabbed. The organisation Britain First, which was founded by former members of the British National Party, has denied that Mair was associated with it and say they condemn the killing.

Thomas Mair was named as a supporter in an online publication of the Springbok Club, an organisation which has defended the white supremacist apartheid regime in South Africa.

The link between Mair and the Springbok Club goes back ten years when its online magazine, the Springbok Cyber Newsletter, was inquiring about the whereabouts of “Thomas Mair, from Batley in Yorkshire [who] was one of the earliest subscribers and supporters of “S.A. Patriot” who has moved from his address in the Fieldhead Estate district of the town.”

The leading article for June 2016 Springbok Cyber Newsletter, which describes itself on its website as being pro-free market capitalism and patriotism and anti-political correctness, was, however, devoted to Britain and the referendum. It started: “On Thursday, 23rd June 2016 all British voters will have the opportunity to vote on the future of their country. They can vote either to remain entrapped in the artificial and retrograde European Union, or to regain their sovereign independence....”

The article ends by declaring: “But we should not only be concentrating at the negative aspects of remaining in the EU. Our campaign should be primarily positive and optimistic for a future outside the EU. The motto of the Patriotic Forum (an umbrella grouping of patriotic organisations which the Springbok Club is part of) is “Out of Europe and into the World”. There is a golden future waiting for Britain out there once the country returns to its traditional vision of looking towards the Open Seas and its ethnic brothers and sisters in the Commonwealth around the globe. The days ahead will inspire us!”

Crazy stuff, sounds like he used a handmade gun from the articles I read.

If you wanted to deal a blow to the Brexit campaign, this would be an incredibly effective way to do it.

I'm so confused - what was the motive?

Was it personal, political, random?

No-one knows yet.

The pro-Remain side have disgustingly tried to get political capital out of this though...

Hopefully the British can see right through this...

It hasn't been confirmed yet, but if the "Britain first" or "put Britain first" statement is true and the killers links to right wing white supremacy and anti-immigration groups are true it is probably political imo.

Is "Britain First" the new Allahu Ackbar?

It would probably relate to the ultra right wing group called Britain First.

Britain First is a far-right and British nationalist political party and movement formed in 2011 by former members of the British National Party (BNP).[15] The party is led by a former BNP councillor Paul Golding, and was founded by Jim Dowson, an anti-abortion campaigner linked to Ulster loyalist militants.[11]

Britain First campaigns primarily against immigration, multiculturalism and what it sees as the Islamisation of the United Kingdom, and advocates the preservation of traditional British culture.

The group is inspired by Ulster loyalism and has a vigilante wing called the "Britain First Defence Force". It attracted attention by taking direct action such as protests outside homes of alleged Islamists, and what it describes as "Christian patrols" and "invasions" of British mosques, and has been noted for its online activism.

The group's claim to be Christian has been condemned by all major denominations of the faith in the UK.[18] It has contested elections to the House of Commons, the European Parliament and the mayoralty of London, but has been unsuccessful in all of them.

Why would it though?

Link anything to the extreme right-wing and Western nations tend to go exactly the opposite way, so killing someone while shouting for one side of the coming vote is a good way to push people the other way and de-legitimize their side.

I was just joking, but I bet there are plenty of conspiracy theorists having a field day.

Thanks Dave123.
There are also stories doing the rounds that she may not even have been his target. That she intervened while he was having an altercation with someone else. Regardless, he was mentally ill, and on psychotropic medication.

Britain has a serious mental health issue - to be more accurate, the way it handles people who are mentally ill. If I'm not mistaken, this is one of just several attacks this year in the UK carried out by someone who shouldn't really be allowed in public.
